sulphur smell from mountain 322kms away
Wellington is reeking of sulphur. Apparently its from Tongariro. It definitely smells out there. I had taken the dog down to the river (Wellington faultline) when I smelt it strongly. Needless to say the dog was shoved back in the car and I got the hell out of there

Gas and sulphur smells from the Mt Tongariro eruption have travelled as far as Wellington this morning.

Many people have reported a smell of sulphur in the air in the capital.

GNS Science duty volcanologist Craig Miller said it was most likely the smells were caused by the eruption and there had been quite a few reports from the lower North Island of a sulphur smell.

"It's a little bit surprising it has gone as far as it has. It will be dissipating as it goes

Thanks for the update. Keep them coming. To update there have been two volcanic eruptions in NZ over the past couple of days.

White Island off the Northern coast has a webcam:

Tongariya midway down the North Island has also erupted and is probably the cause of the sulphur smell in Wellington.

Judging by the geonet facebook page everyone to the east of the mountain (over the main mountain range into Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa) and the central and south of the North Island through to the top of the South Island is smelling sulphur. They say the mountain is in its degassing phase.

They think three new hydrothermal vents have opened up.

Poor old Dino the dinosaur may not make it through this White Island event. You can just see him sitting there on the right. He has survived out there for years now.

Obviously, looking at this photo and the seismo there has been another eruption from the crater.

Lol, re Dino. You kiwi's. Jptdknpa

Sounds like it is ramping up, not down. though :(

I'm safe in the knowledge that I will never be put into the nuthouse ... My doctors say I would be a bad influence on the other patients.

Bump

If society fell apart, we - the people would build a new one. Most people are good at their core, and when we see things that are wrong we work to fix them together. Make friends with your neighbors, get involved with your community - because we will rebuild our lives, our communities, from horrible circumstances we always will.
