If enough people express their concerns maybe they will leave it as is?

When enough people complain, they give you more of the same. think taxes, laws, fines, Obummer, rules, censorship, see?

It's worth a try.

Just click the contact thing up at the right side (top) and complain about the changes...

I'm not a fan of this at all... there was nothing wrong with the previous format and it was very user friendly.

I also don't like how they are making this change during the heightened activity here in So Cal.

Jhikpghf..I share your thoughts.
It is a lot less user friendly.
Used to be real easy to pull up the US map and see all of the EQs in the past 7 days...now, it's hard as Hell to try and get that .

I guess they figured since the #'s are getting crazy high...people don't need to be able to see it so easy.

I was thinking the same thing.

Thank you for contacting USGS. We're sorry to hear that you don't like the new website upgrade. The new design, functionality and features were based on feedback and suggestions from users. Plus, the new site incorporates smaller magnitude earthquakes from regional sensor networks that the old site does not. Please see the tips below for using the new site.

The redesign of the USGS Real-time Earthquake Map combines both World and U.S. information into one map interface and provides features that allow users to customize the map to better suit their individual needs.

The redesign allows you to quickly zoom to various predetermined regions such as the conterminous U.S., California and Alaska by clicking links located just above the map area. You can also zoom into the map using the slider bar on the left or the zoom box tool just below the slider.

Using the Control Panel to the left of the map, you can customize your search by selecting certain criteria such as Magnitude, Earthquake Age and number of Earthquakes to Display. The default value for minimum magnitude is 2.5, and the default value for number of earthquakes to display is 300.

One tip: When changing Age or Magnitude settings, you may also need to increase the number of Earthquakes to Display; otherwise, the display will show just the most recent 300 earthquakes meeting your criteria (or another sort order if you have changed the default sort order for the listing underneath the map). Check the information in the Summary column to see how many earthquakes meet your criteria, and how many are displayed.

As you change your zoom level and criteria, the map will automatically update as will the list of events shown below the map. Hovering over an event on the map displays its magnitude, date & time. Clicking on the map highlights the event on the map and in the list. Clicking the event in the list (or the tab that appears on the map) will take you to the event details page.

Additional features of the redesigned Real-time Earthquake Map allow you to change the map background using the Map Layers tab.

One additional feature of this new website is that, if you plan on wanting to use the same view each time you visit the Real-time Earthquake Map, once you have all the settings you prefer and have zoomed to your area of interest, then click on "Settings" on the upper right-hand portion of the map and choose "Save Settings". That way, each time you go to this website, you will have your preferences already in effect.
