great post
what about russian

Closest "modern" language to Sanskrit (other than Prakrit). The problem is that the language has been reworked a number of times (Peter the Great, Stalin). Sources are rough. What should you read? If you know nothing about the culture, that can be rough.

I've been thinking about taking it (or Polish) on this year.

I took Latin in high school and college. With Latin you learn a lot about the mother-lode of European culture, and would also be able to read most Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian).

On the other hand, since we now live in what is for all practical purposes a bilingual country, I'd think you'd want to learn Spanish first; it would probably pay the most dividends.

Fighting ignorance -- one ignoramus at a time.
