**ULP UNKNOWN LUNATIC POSTER**

A vigorous upper-air disturbance, and just enough cold air combined to squeeze out the season's first snow in parts of northeast Minnesota and northern Wisconsin overnight Sep. 21 into early Sep. 22, 2012, just in time for the official arrival of fall.

In some areas, this snow was about a month earlier than the long-term average for the season's first measurable snow, and was enough to cover grass and car tops.

We have the photos, images and tweets from this below.

That part of WI is known for getting lake effect snow in massive amounts, like Buffalo NY does.

Our winter severely lacked last year as well, and forecasters up here are predicting an "indian summer," and then probably one of the harshest winters in decades. So, you're right. Everywhere is due.

well...we'll live....sorry bout those who have lived here their whole lives and don't prepare in case...generator , wood burner.....here..even in central illinois the cold can kill...

Haven't even had a good first frost yet here. Idk whats up, it's too warm up here right now. Usually the reg. highs and lows are mid teens to low 1-10's. Today I am going to spend outside, the UV has been ridiculous lately. You can almost feel the sun pulsating on your skin.

The jet stream is shifting downwards. It will dump all the cold on the US and lower latitudes, and maintain the heat in the higher latitudes (arctic, etc). My warning would be moot for canada as they are used to snow. For the US that doesn't expect it due to the severe droughts however...

Either way, the weather is swinging between extremes, it's swung to high heat for the US, now it's going to swing back.

Also, you hit upon the real reason - UV. The solar activity is what's causing the extremes as the solar activity itself reaches extremes causing the weather here to swing with it.
