Ascena Retail Group said Monday it's winding down its Dressbarn business and plans to shut all 650 or so of the women's clothing stores

Amazon Retail Graveyard.

Gpicchfr

This is a truth. Blame this or that, the reality is consumers are doing more and more online shopping and not buying from traditional mall retail stores. It happened with Sears, Kmart, Payless shoes. This isn't a new thing that started when Donald Trump took office.

No way those stupid giant stores and shopping plazas can be profitable except for the construction builders renting them out

I think these giant box stores that are fundamentally flawed from the outset were around before trump got elected

You know it.
Growth at all cost. Crowd out competitors. Cut into margins so only large chains can survive.

Somebody gets rich building those things but they are doomed to fail

Are they ?

There are 2 in the town I live in....both were built before I was born(55yr now)...one has 6 stores and the other has 10-11 stores....both are fully occupied and always have been ....the reason, the guy who owns them told me that it's way better to have full occupancy at lower than market rates that to have empty buildings sitting there making NO Money.

Where you live is unique. Go anywhere with a lot of suburban growth.

Say, Columbus Ohio. New mall gets built and the old one vacated. Just sits empty or mostly empty.

Didn't say that we don't have those, the claim was that all were like that...was pointing out that they aren't

So what about Walmart and all the subsidies and tax breaks municipal governments give them to open their stores while taxing the crap out of all the other stores, downtown, in strip malls, and traditional malls? Walmart has a long history in its retail apocalypse role then given credit for lately. Maybe along with Amazon we need to look at Walmart also.

For what ?...using their business model to sway Town/City/County councils to grant the tax "breaks"

Seems you're wanting to hang the wrong folks here....

What are you? A Walmart PR employee. Yes, then the other businesses get taxed literally to death. I'm truth-telling, so f*#k off!

Nope, not employee, just a wise old man trying to get your anger steered in the right direction......

Just what did Walmart do that any other large business or company do when looking to build new/relocate hasn't done ?

BMW was given MASSIVE tax package to put their North American plant near me

Same for large Michelin tire plant expansion

And Lockheed to build the F16

So ask, who was elected to office and voted to give these massive tax packages to these companies ?......yep, elected county council 'officials'

Here's another kicker....the city had a Atlanta Braves baseball minor league team located here .....Braves said "We need a new stadium" ....city said "No way".....Braves relocated...less than a year later the city 'enticed' a franchise of the Boston Red Sox to come here....with a BRAND NEW Stadium !

Sorry Luna, but on this one your anger is misplaced .

I'll agree we need to stop electing idiots and that municipalities need to stop buckling to Walmart. Walmart intentionally sends in the savviest negotiators and takes advantage of the local yokels. They don't need to do that and their tactics have been destroying this country one small town at a time. I'll just consider your point the other prong to the problem.
