I want a car manufacturer to make a 100% mechanical car again. Make it the best they can, with modern manufacturing processes, but 100% mechanical.

Something that could survive an EMP with no problems. I would love that.

It would probably be super cheap to fix and maintain too.

I agree new cars have way too many bells and whistles now. I don't need a butt warmer in my car seat. Or Sirius XM radio. Or 99% of the other electronics. They have you paying more for the bells and whistles than the damn engine!

I don’t even mind the bells and whistles and more computerized vehicles. It’s the nature of progress and a fully mechanical car built on yesteryears technology sounds great right up until you get 12 mpg and the transmission shits out every 75,000 miles like they did in the “good old days”.

But...at least asswarmers DO solve the problem of cold asses. Of debatable value to some but at least it adds SOMETHING of possible use. What the hell kind of “problem” does a motorized tail gate on a pickup truck solve???

The cars are a lot better now.

chuckle

But my mom has a brand new stove/oven with a zigbee transmitter for the smart grid.

The console attracted cockroaches(I had a modem that did that) and when the repair guy came over with the refurbuished console board, I asked him to disable the zigbee.

"Can't. If you disable that the whole thing won't work."

It'll be the same with cars; disable the 5G, won't start.

Just buy a 1960s car, it is rapture and emp proof, and you can work on it yourself.

Now back to work slave or are you paid to post?

yeah and good luck finding parts

Getting to be time to buy a new or almost new car again sometime this year so I’ve been looking around. WTF is going on with some of these new “features” being offered up? I mean...automakers have ALWAYS unsold you non-essential things of convenience or luxury or even sold you a certain image that you’d portray to the world by being an owner of the new whatevermobile. But some of the newest design and engineering decisions are just utterly mystifying to me and I can think of no sane person or possible use case for having some of these.

For example:

1. The new Chevy pickups have push botton motorized TAILGATES of all things? Why? WTF for? So now I dont have to be “burdened” with using a simple handle and can instead walk around to the front my truck get in, turn on the power or engine, press a button and proceed to wait for 20 seconds until I can turn my car off again and go get my sh*t unloaded? Also, add to this category motorized SUV hatches. Nothing says “convenience like freezing your ass off while you stare at your hatch opening and closing in slow motion.

2. Touchscreens f*cking EVERYWHERE. In fact, the upcoming Subaru ascent is said to have eliminated ALL physical buttons and levers...even for mirror adjustments and windows in favor of more expensive and buggy capacitive touch-pads...and go f*#k yourself if you live in the Northern half of the country and might wanna wear gloves some morning when it’s -20 below out.

3. 4G cellular WIFI hotspots. Can somebody tell me what POSSIBLE f*cking benefit there is for paying an extra monthly fee to get the EXACT GODDAMN SAME internet connection I already have on my phone? It’s not any faster, or better coverage or anything...and all smartphones can pretty much act as hotspots for a laptop or something if you need it in a pinch...but I now I have the luxury of just paying double if I wanted to??? If they were gonna do it...Why in the HELL wouldn’t they try it with a satellite data connection so you could at least say it offered guaranteed coverage even in remote areas as long as you had an unobstructed path to the sky?? Might of use for some more than others...but at least it’s SOME kind of new functionality.

4. Push button ignitions and completely keyless entry. OK...the keyless entry seems kinda cool...but some of the newest cars have ZERO physical locks on them. Not even just ONE to use on the drivers side as an emergency option. Better hope the weird non-standard watch battery in your keyfob doesn’t take a sh*t when your doors are locked, huh?

5. Honda Civics bizarre new “sport mode” on their CVT transmissions. I sh*t you not...Honda successfully engineered a really good, reliable, and efficient CVT...and then ALSO engineered additional moving parts and a button to press so you can artificially make it “feel” like you have traditional gears and undo all the gains in acceleration and fuel efficiency. Does a company really want a consumer that stupid??

6. Cars with zero option to carry a spare tire. Again...I sh*t you not. Some of the new 2019’s won’t even have a PLACE to put even a little toy tire donut.

7. BMW has decided to turn the goddamn radio off unless you pay a $90 annual “subscription fee” for the Apple CarPlay system. Mind you...this isn’t APPLE charging/requiring this nor is it just some added Services like unlimited streaming or something. Just we want $90/yr or we’ll turn the f*cking radio and nav system off because f*#k you.

8. Non-upgradable “Infotainment” systems in general. OK...I’ll admit it’s kinda cool to have my phone integrate with the car and google maps instead of less frequently updated garmin systems. However...every phone or tablet I’ve ever owned is a useless piece of sh*t in about 3 years as new operating systems, industry standard etc require ever faster processors and more memory. No problem...but SHOULDNT we then naturally expect that the $3,500 android based nav and Music system will be similarly useless in about 5 years TOPS? Call me old fashioned...but I still want to be able to play the f*cking radio in a six year old vehicle that I paid $50-$60k for and 3rd part solutions seem unlikely has cars become ever more computerized and proprietary.

I’m sure there’s a million more...but you guys get the idea.
Who is asking for this sh*t?

lol
GREAT IDEA!!!
Then when it breaks down at 60,000 miles I can just swing by O’Reillys and do it all myself!!

I’m SURE they always keep a few fuel pumps for ‘64 Studebaker Lark’s on the shelves at all their locations “just in case”.

Ever heard of a little know website called Ebay?

Of course...and just like the respondent stated...EBay would be a perfectly viable back up solution toO’Reilleys given that dotcoms and my PC are impervious to EMP stack as well as all of the small parcel delivery trucks for USPS and UPS so my studebaker parts that I purchased online can actually get to me.

In fact, the ONLY thing that wouldn’t work in the event of large scale EMP attack would be new consumer vehicles. Everything else is invincible to them and life would continue on normally aside from being inconvenienced on my commute.
lol

They are getting ready for automated vehicle systems where you have no control over your car. You won't be able to work on it either, when it needs maintenance it will drive itself to the shop.

Actually, with OBD III it'll pull over on the side of the road, turn itself off and report you to the EPA for emissions violations, then the po-po will come give you a ticket.

Or a copless motorcycle will give you a ticket.

Sooo...lemme get this straight.

You think that in the unlikely event of a large scale EMP disaster....
1. EBay would be immune? Do they run the site on old school punchcard mechanical servers from the ‘40’s?? lol

2. I would still have electricity at home.

3. None of my computers or cell phones would have gotten fried.

4. The merchant account system for processing payments is somehow also impervious to the effects.

5. No ISP in the country would be affected and individuals could still post up their random items for sale.

6. The UPS keeps a duplicate fleet of vehicles in farday cages and the USPS could recreate the Pony Express in a day or two so I could get my part shipped to me without problem.

Brilliant thinking here and all...but I have to ask. What’s really so bad about an EMP attack then that would warrant owning an obsolete piece of sh*t? Why not just buy a bike to get to work on until my insurance claim goes through as it sounds the National supply chain is basically untouched in your strange world?

RE: WTF kind of “features” are these in new cars now?
I rented a VW SUV recently and it had a 'feature' of the engine turning off at every stoplight. Just press on the gas to 'restart' your car.

OK, maybe that saves a little gas - but it is going to be hell on the starter, and what happens when it decides not to start again after it turned it's own self off?

I'm pretty much at the point I want to roll down my own windows again. Screw all these 'features' that end up being another pain in the ass - and cost a fortune to repair.

Out of 56 cars I owned all of them were 1970 or older.

I am driving a 93 Ford now but I didn't pay for it.

And it's pretty good, except when you turn on the ignition the ABS light comes on and it doesn't have ABS.

So I wrecked it.

RE: WTF kind of “features” are these in new cars now?
Because cars will not at first be allowed to be fully autonomous....meaning you will be required to watch over the vehicles driving....

In car cameras will watch and sensors note if your concentration fails or you start to fall asleep...The designers are even toying with mildly electrocuting the occupier to keep you awake....

Put basically, Your car is going to Taze you ......I thought ai was never allowed to hurt humans, is that not the prime directive..?

Never believe anything until it has been fully denied.

RE: WTF kind of “features” are these in new cars now?
Technology used to be more expensive than mechanical systems, now it is there other way around, so it is used to keep costs down.

Mechanical items wear out after so long. An electronic switch (transistor) can outlast a mechanical switch decades.

The in-car wifi is so your kids can use their iPads or whatever on a trip.

I never seen a motorized tailgate, but have you felt the tailgates on newer trucks? They are heavy. I guess it would be an option for older people so they can put groceries in their trucks easier.

That brings me to another topic, why do so many old people by trucks and use them as cars? Never putting in a load of dirt, a couch, etc?

Well, you can all quit worrying. In 15 years you won't be able to drive cars anymore, they will drive you. If you have an outstanding warrant, it will deliver you to the nearest cop shop. Better have your child support current, it will be added to your bill. Can't pay? Free ride to jail. Enjoy your commy, f ucked up future.

Glad I'm old.
