It's people's own fault, they want too much. These same folks are merciless in blaming us baby boomers for supposedly causing a mess, but they're going along with and even causing a lot of grief with demands for an even easier lifestyle. And screaming "I won't go cashless!" while swiping their phones for anything and everything.

Vehicles nowadays are nothing but computers, and if you don't think their systems are keeping track of where you go and what you do in your vehicle you are sadly mistaken. All kinds of buttons to push - hope you don't lean on the wrong one and then try to correct things and while distracted plow into some innocent people on a sidewalk.

Things will get worse until we have no choice but to go back to the basics.

I bet in a couple years I can take a small portable scanner and scan your car, and create 3d models which I can then use to print out any component in any material and color you desire.

But by then they will ban all self driving vehicles.

NO worries, my flying car is almost finished.

First drone with a passenger hit an Asian test market today or maybe yesterday. It's not far off, well it's here but only super rare cases.

RE: WTF kind of “features” are these in new cars now?
Wait till your shiny new car is able to time travel.

You go back 10,000 years, and one of your Flux Capacitors blow.
Now you are stuck waiting a 10,000 years for them to invent the technology, just to get your car fixed.

Why do you think you see millions of years old tire tracks in some places of the world?
Fossilized tire tracks left in mud. chuckle

Then you get a break and some one invents a time machine communication device.
You dial up and sign onto the Ebay parts store, and find your part.
Only $150,000...1/2 price! Cheer

Then you see what the shipping fees are.
$1.5 million to ship it back to your time.
S977

Ya, wait for it.
They will work you over on parts and shipping fees.
Mfers are scam artists, I tell ya.
Those parts are designed to break down.
Jhikpghf

Plus they ship it, with no guarantee it will work or not.
No returns accepted either. S977

Aarrrggghhhh!!!!!

The ole "my car ran out of gas while on a date" story gets better with time.

I want a car manufacturer to make a 100% mechanical car again. Make it the best they can, with modern manufacturing processes, but 100% mechanical.

Something that could survive an EMP with no problems. I would love that.

It would probably be super cheap to fix and maintain too.

I agree new cars have way too many bells and whistles now. I don't need a butt warmer in my car seat. Or Sirius XM radio. Or 99% of the other electronics. They have you paying more for the bells and whistles than the damn engine!

link to image: https://dy98q4zwk7hnp.cloudfront.net/197...&w=430&s=1

Those were $1495 in 1970^^^.
And you could literally take the whole thing apart with the little roll of tools supplied with it. Just needed a feeler gauge and a 36mm socket to get the fly wheel nut off. The cars now days, you need a couple thousand $s worth of test equipment just to find out what the hells wrong.
All the electronic doo dads are there so you have to take your car to a dealer to get it serviced! THE MONEYS NOT IN SALES IT'S IN REPAIR! They can only sell you one car, but they can get you into that service bay a bunch of times a year! Jhikpghf

My biggest worry is a person who depends on all the cameras & sensors to control the car borrows his buddys older car and plows into me because he was waiting on the sensors to stop the car while texting. What the hell could go wrong!?!?! Rofl

OH it is a lot more than that.

When carb engines started getting hundreds of miles per gallon or running totally without fuel, just running on they know they had to but a stop to the mechanic witnessing that.

They need a black box to make sure the engine shut down.

By 1970's most cars had what was called a fuel shut off solenoid in the carb, it was a rod that blocked any fuel from bleeding into the intake manifold, as usual it was only a one wire solenoid, power and ground was though the housing.

It was a normally closed switch in that it required power to activate it, you turn on the key it opens car starts, you turn off the key, it closes and stay shut.

Funny thing with no spark and no fuel the cars did not shut down, people drove around using no spark and no fuel, chuckle

So in 1972 they added another wire to that solenoid, this time a spark was added to kill the engine, and it worked some times, this was the 2 wire solenoid.

Diesel engines were even worse, because they have no spark to begin with.

Soon they added a computer to do this and got rid of the carb for wasteful fuel injection and mileage has stayed the same almost ever since.

Now when you go to the mechanic he plugs a black box into your car makes some adjustments and you drive off, unless you broke something.

Getting to be time to buy a new or almost new car again sometime this year so I’ve been looking around. WTF is going on with some of these new “features” being offered up? I mean...automakers have ALWAYS unsold you non-essential things of convenience or luxury or even sold you a certain image that you’d portray to the world by being an owner of the new whatevermobile. But some of the newest design and engineering decisions are just utterly mystifying to me and I can think of no sane person or possible use case for having some of these.

For example:

1. The new Chevy pickups have push botton motorized TAILGATES of all things? Why? WTF for? So now I dont have to be “burdened” with using a simple handle and can instead walk around to the front my truck get in, turn on the power or engine, press a button and proceed to wait for 20 seconds until I can turn my car off again and go get my sh*t unloaded? Also, add to this category motorized SUV hatches. Nothing says “convenience like freezing your ass off while you stare at your hatch opening and closing in slow motion.

2. Touchscreens f*cking EVERYWHERE. In fact, the upcoming Subaru ascent is said to have eliminated ALL physical buttons and levers...even for mirror adjustments and windows in favor of more expensive and buggy capacitive touch-pads...and go f*#k yourself if you live in the Northern half of the country and might wanna wear gloves some morning when it’s -20 below out.

3. 4G cellular WIFI hotspots. Can somebody tell me what POSSIBLE f*cking benefit there is for paying an extra monthly fee to get the EXACT GODDAMN SAME internet connection I already have on my phone? It’s not any faster, or better coverage or anything...and all smartphones can pretty much act as hotspots for a laptop or something if you need it in a pinch...but I now I have the luxury of just paying double if I wanted to??? If they were gonna do it...Why in the HELL wouldn’t they try it with a satellite data connection so you could at least say it offered guaranteed coverage even in remote areas as long as you had an unobstructed path to the sky?? Might of use for some more than others...but at least it’s SOME kind of new functionality.

4. Push button ignitions and completely keyless entry. OK...the keyless entry seems kinda cool...but some of the newest cars have ZERO physical locks on them. Not even just ONE to use on the drivers side as an emergency option. Better hope the weird non-standard watch battery in your keyfob doesn’t take a sh*t when your doors are locked, huh?

5. Honda Civics bizarre new “sport mode” on their CVT transmissions. I sh*t you not...Honda successfully engineered a really good, reliable, and efficient CVT...and then ALSO engineered additional moving parts and a button to press so you can artificially make it “feel” like you have traditional gears and undo all the gains in acceleration and fuel efficiency. Does a company really want a consumer that stupid??

6. Cars with zero option to carry a spare tire. Again...I sh*t you not. Some of the new 2019’s won’t even have a PLACE to put even a little toy tire donut.

7. BMW has decided to turn the goddamn radio off unless you pay a $90 annual “subscription fee” for the Apple CarPlay system. Mind you...this isn’t APPLE charging/requiring this nor is it just some added Services like unlimited streaming or something. Just we want $90/yr or we’ll turn the f*cking radio and nav system off because f*#k you.

8. Non-upgradable “Infotainment” systems in general. OK...I’ll admit it’s kinda cool to have my phone integrate with the car and google maps instead of less frequently updated garmin systems. However...every phone or tablet I’ve ever owned is a useless piece of sh*t in about 3 years as new operating systems, industry standard etc require ever faster processors and more memory. No problem...but SHOULDNT we then naturally expect that the $3,500 android based nav and Music system will be similarly useless in about 5 years TOPS? Call me old fashioned...but I still want to be able to play the f*cking radio in a six year old vehicle that I paid $50-$60k for and 3rd part solutions seem unlikely has cars become ever more computerized and proprietary.

I’m sure there’s a million more...but you guys get the idea.
Who is asking for this sh*t?
