WTF kind of “features” are these in new cars now?

Getting to be time to buy a new or almost new car again sometime this year so I’ve been looking around. WTF is going on with some of these new “features” being offered up? I mean...automakers have ALWAYS unsold you non-essential things of convenience or luxury or even sold you a certain image that you’d portray to the world by being an owner of the new whatevermobile. But some of the newest design and engineering decisions are just utterly mystifying to me and I can think of no sane person or possible use case for having some of these.

For example:

1. The new Chevy pickups have push botton motorized TAILGATES of all things? Why? WTF for? So now I dont have to be “burdened” with using a simple handle and can instead walk around to the front my truck get in, turn on the power or engine, press a button and proceed to wait for 20 seconds until I can turn my car off again and go get my sh*t unloaded? Also, add to this category motorized SUV hatches. Nothing says “convenience like freezing your ass off while you stare at your hatch opening and closing in slow motion.

2. Touchscreens f*cking EVERYWHERE. In fact, the upcoming Subaru ascent is said to have eliminated ALL physical buttons and levers...even for mirror adjustments and windows in favor of more expensive and buggy capacitive touch-pads...and go f*#k yourself if you live in the Northern half of the country and might wanna wear gloves some morning when it’s -20 below out.

3. 4G cellular WIFI hotspots. Can somebody tell me what POSSIBLE f*cking benefit there is for paying an extra monthly fee to get the EXACT GODDAMN SAME internet connection I already have on my phone? It’s not any faster, or better coverage or anything...and all smartphones can pretty much act as hotspots for a laptop or something if you need it in a pinch...but I now I have the luxury of just paying double if I wanted to??? If they were gonna do it...Why in the HELL wouldn’t they try it with a satellite data connection so you could at least say it offered guaranteed coverage even in remote areas as long as you had an unobstructed path to the sky?? Might of use for some more than others...but at least it’s SOME kind of new functionality.

4. Push button ignitions and completely keyless entry. OK...the keyless entry seems kinda cool...but some of the newest cars have ZERO physical locks on them. Not even just ONE to use on the drivers side as an emergency option. Better hope the weird non-standard watch battery in your keyfob doesn’t take a sh*t when your doors are locked, huh?

5. Honda Civics bizarre new “sport mode” on their CVT transmissions. I sh*t you not...Honda successfully engineered a really good, reliable, and efficient CVT...and then ALSO engineered additional moving parts and a button to press so you can artificially make it “feel” like you have traditional gears and undo all the gains in acceleration and fuel efficiency. Does a company really want a consumer that stupid??

6. Cars with zero option to carry a spare tire. Again...I sh*t you not. Some of the new 2019’s won’t even have a PLACE to put even a little toy tire donut.

7. BMW has decided to turn the goddamn radio off unless you pay a $90 annual “subscription fee” for the Apple CarPlay system. Mind you...this isn’t APPLE charging/requiring this nor is it just some added Services like unlimited streaming or something. Just we want $90/yr or we’ll turn the f*cking radio and nav system off because f*#k you.

8. Non-upgradable “Infotainment” systems in general. OK...I’ll admit it’s kinda cool to have my phone integrate with the car and google maps instead of less frequently updated garmin systems. However...every phone or tablet I’ve ever owned is a useless piece of sh*t in about 3 years as new operating systems, industry standard etc require ever faster processors and more memory. No problem...but SHOULDNT we then naturally expect that the $3,500 android based nav and Music system will be similarly useless in about 5 years TOPS? Call me old fashioned...but I still want to be able to play the f*cking radio in a six year old vehicle that I paid $50-$60k for and 3rd part solutions seem unlikely has cars become ever more computerized and proprietary.

I’m sure there’s a million more...but you guys get the idea.
Who is asking for this sh*t?

RE: WTF kind of “features” are these in new cars now?
I want a car manufacturer to make a 100% mechanical car again. Make it the best they can, with modern manufacturing processes, but 100% mechanical.

Something that could survive an EMP with no problems. I would love that.

It would probably be super cheap to fix and maintain too.

I agree new cars have way too many bells and whistles now. I don't need a butt warmer in my car seat. Or Sirius XM radio. Or 99% of the other electronics. They have you paying more for the bells and whistles than the damn engine!

Just buy a 1960s car, it is rapture and emp proof, and you can work on it yourself.

Now back to work slave or are you paid to post?

Yeah because I want to drive a 60 year old car.

My car is from 2004 and it's being eaten alive by rust. No thanks.

Me too! I want to crank my windows, stomp on clutches and change gears on the column or on the floor, to adjust my seat with the little bit of muscle it required, fill a gas tank with the old metal coil inside that stops gas stealers, and who in the hail uses cruise control anyway?

I don’t even mind the bells and whistles and more computerized vehicles. It’s the nature of progress and a fully mechanical car built on yesteryears technology sounds great right up until you get 12 mpg and the transmission shits out every 75,000 miles like they did in the “good old days”.

But...at least asswarmers DO solve the problem of cold asses. Of debatable value to some but at least it adds SOMETHING of possible use. What the hell kind of “problem” does a motorized tail gate on a pickup truck solve???

The owner of this brand new Volvo crashed their pride and joy four hours after picking it up – because they had not read the manual.

The fresh-from-the-forecourt car ploughed into the back of a lorry in Devon after the driver failed to use the cruise control properly.

lol
GREAT IDEA!!!
Then when it breaks down at 60,000 miles I can just swing by O’Reillys and do it all myself!!

I’m SURE they always keep a few fuel pumps for ‘64 Studebaker Lark’s on the shelves at all their locations “just in case”.
