We had 7 computers in high school...

And only 5 on them worked...

The others were for spare parts...

We also had a commodore computer...

---

If you have a computer class with few computers you diagram...

You watch movies with computers and write papers...

You read books and magazines about computers and write papers...

You go to the city police department and look at their computer...

What the heck for? You guys didn't even have internet back then?
Nope! There were bulletin boards like a mini website. there was actually a BBS software that would swap up / dls with the one before yours in line, then call the next BBS and do the same. You could send a cracked game from the U.S. and get a thank you back in two or three days.

CityPolice Dept!?!? they still had records on 3x5 cards in humongous roller cabinets. If you were a real bad guy you had 8 or 10 (or to the floor) cards stapled together accordion style.

I had a copy of Windows 1. It was slow and stupid, and running DOS was much better. Windows3.1 was the breakthrough.

I remember playing The Oregon trail on DOS in School as a kid.

The Amiga was the first modern multimedia, multitasking, GUI driven PC.

Released in 1985,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga

I used mine until Windows 2000 was released, no Microsoft or Apple system would do what the Amiga could.

To this day the Commodore 64 is the single most-sold desktop computer model in history. Between 10 and 17 million units.

Then this happened:

Quote:In spite of his successes in making the company profitable and bringing the Amiga line to market, Rattigan was soon forced out in a power struggle with majority shareholder, Irving Gould. This is widely regarded as the turning point, as further improvements to the Amiga were eroded by rapid improvements in other platforms.[17]

In 1994, Commodore filed for bankruptcy and its assets were purchased by Escom, a German PC manufacturer, who created the subsidiary company Amiga Technologies. They re-released the A1200 and A4000T, and introduced a new 68060 version of the A4000T. However, Escom in turn went bankrupt in 1997.

The Amiga brand was then sold to a US Wintel PC manufacturer, Gateway 2000, which had announced grand plans for it. However, in 2000, Gateway sold the Amiga brand without having released any products. The current owner of the trademark, Amiga, Inc., licensed the rights to sell hardware using either the Amiga or AmigaOne brand to Eyetech Group, Hyperion Entertainment and Commodore USA.

When my dad got his IBM he gave me his old Commodore 64. It had no hard drive, booted up to a BASIC command prompt, and you had to program what you wanted it to run, or stick a floppy disc in and run a program from the floppy disc.

I played the first Wolfenstein (not 3D) on that. Also lots of other games. Centipede was one.

I wonder if Commodore had stuck around, what it would look like today.

I remember playing The Oregon trail on DOS in School as a kid.

I remember people punching cards with holes, slowly writing programs.

To run the program, a stack of punch cards would be fed into a computer.

This is the kind of computers we learned with.

We had Fortran and COBOL.

It was better than now. They made us think.

Android and IOS are total crap in comparison.

I hate stupidphones. They are made for the sheep.

We had Selectric typewriters.

I used them too. I wish I could still find one. I would buy it. Not sure I will find the accessories.

I used to be on a BBS with a dial-up modem. You had to dial a * prefix before you hooked up to disable call-waiting.DOS with a Tandy1000 laptop Windows3.1. BBS was similar to a forum like this, even the screen names are similar!
