Most people think of the 5-1/4" floppy disks as big, but earlier there actually were 8" disks.

I once worked in a place thst still had the mega old 12" disks. About 3" thick. It was the same company where I first came across windows 3.1

I was lucky enough to be there when they finally got rid of their dinosaur of a system and installed a PC network with windows 3.1 machines.

I cut my techie teeth on that mega upgrade.

Those old mainframes had immense amounts of gold inside.

That was like my first computer. But not a fancy XT. 2 floppy disk drives and no hard drive.
A really slow dial-up modem.

There was actually a company who specialized in collecting the make of mainframe we had. They did the hardware maintenance and them up when companies upgraded. They were the only company left in the UK who could supply any (refurbished) spare parts.

I assume they stripped them and sold any material that was of value when the hardware was beyond all repair.
