The Twelve Chairs (1970)

Quote:The Twelve Chairs is a 1970 American comedy film directed by Mel Brooks and starring Frank Langella, Ron Moody, and Dom DeLuise. The screenplay was written by Brooks. The film was one of at least 18 film adaptations of the Russian 1928 novel The Twelve Chairs by Ilf and Petrov.

In the Soviet Union in 1927, Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov, an impoverished aristocrat from Imperial Russia now working as a local village bureaucrat, is summoned to the deathbed of his mother-in-law. She reveals before dying that a fortune in jewels had been hidden from the Bolsheviks by being sewn into the seat cushion of one of the twelve chairs from the family's dining room set. After hearing the dying woman's confession, the Russian Orthodox priest Father Fyodor, who had arrived to administer the last rites, decides to abandon the Church and attempt to steal the treasure for himself. Shortly afterwards in the town of Stargorod, where Vorobyaninov's former mansion is located, a homeless con-artist, Ostap Bender, meets the dispossessed nobleman and manipulates his way into a partnership in his search for the family riches.

The chairs, along with all other private property, had been appropriated by the State after the Russian Revolution. Vorobyaninov and Bender set off together to locate the chairs and recover the fortune, but are stymied by a series of false leads and other trying events. They find that the chairs have been split up and sold individually. Therefore, their hunt requires a great deal of travel to track down and open up each piece of the set in order to eliminate it as a possible location of the booty. As they progress, they meet comrades from every walk of life in Soviet Russian society, transforming the film into a satirical send up of failing Communism.

Corruption (1968)

Quote:Corruption is a 1968 British horror film directed by Robert Hartford-Davis, from a screenplay by Derek Ford and Donald Ford, and featuring Peter Cushing, Sue Lloyd, Noel Trevarthen, Kate O'Mara, David Lodge and Antony Booth.[1]

The film is a loose riff on the plot of the 1960 French horror film Eyes Without a Face, and is notable for its atypical contemporary setting (most of Cushing's Gothic Horror films were set in the past) and its extreme (for the time) gore and violence

Sir John Rowan (Peter Cushing), a prominent surgeon, meets and falls in love with twenty-something fashion model Lynn Nolan (Sue Lloyd). Despite the difference in their lives and ages -- he a respected medical professional in his fifties, she the toast of Carnaby Street, running in a circle of poseurs, pretenders, and people famous for being famous -- he is madly in love with her, "madly" being the operant word here. His jealousy leads to a fight at a photo shoot, which results in Lynn's disfigurement. Driven by combination of guilt and love, Rowan violates medical protocols with a procedure, involving the transplant of tissue and pituitary secretions from a female cadaver -- that restores Lynn's beauty, and rescues their romance. But it turns out that his success is only temporary, and soon her face is deteriorating, requiring another operation -- only this time, without a cadaver available, Rowan must secure a "donor" himself. He chooses a prostitute, whom he kills and decapitates, rationalizing her death to himself rather unconvincingly. Oblivious to the terrible cost of her surgery, Lynn is relieved to see her beauty restored. But Rowan is unhinged by the murder he has committed, and fearful that the police will eventually trace it back to him. And his colleague Dr. Steve Harris (Noel Traverthen), who is engaged to Lynn's sister (Kate O'Mara), is becoming suspicious over Rowan's furtiveness about his achievement -- if his success with Lynn is half what it seems to be, why does he seem to be in no hurry to publish an account of his procedure and its results? The couple finally decide to go off on holiday to a seaside cottage and forget their worries -- until her face starts to show signs of deterioration. Now they need a new "donor," and first attempt to entice a young girl (Wendy Varnals) they meet at the beach back to their home. But complications ensue, first because Rowan doesn't want to commit another murder, and then because this girl isn't what she seems, and disappears -- soon the doctor has to look for yet another victim, whom he find on a train. And then their home is invaded by the gang of hippie/thieves led there by the girl. And little does anyone, including Rowan, realize that Lynn has gradually gone even crazier than her doctor/fiance.

Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)

Quote:Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! is a 1965 American exploitation film directed by Russ Meyer and co-written by Meyer and Jack Moran. It follows three go-go dancers who embark on a spree of kidnapping and murder in the California desert.

The film is known for its violence, provocative gender roles, and eminently quotable "dialogue to shame Raymond Chandler".[4] It is also remembered for the performance of star Tura Satana, whose character Richard Corliss called "the most honest, maybe the one honest, portrayal in the Meyer canon".[5] Faster, Pussycat! was a commercial and critical failure upon its initial release, but it has since become widely regarded as an important and influential film

Russ Meyer's cult favorite follows sadistic go-go dancers Varla (Tura Satana), Rosie (Haji) and Billie (Lori Williams) as they break free from the nightclub where they perform and race out to the desert to stir up a little mayhem. After karate expert Varla kills an innocent man, the voluptuous trio takes his girlfriend (Susan Bernard) hostage as they attempt to wheedle a hidden fortune from a misogynistic old man (Paul Trinka) and his muscle-bound, brain-damaged son (Dennis Busch).

The Innocents (1961)

Quote:The Innocents is a 1961 British psychological horror film directed and produced by Jack Clayton, and starring Deborah Kerr, Michael Redgrave, and Megs Jenkins. Based on the novella The Turn of the Screw by the American novelist Henry James, the screenplay was adapted by William Archibald and Truman Capote, who used Archibald's own stage play—also titled The Innocents—as a primary source text. Its plot follows a governess who watches over two children and comes to fear that their large estate is haunted by ghosts and that the children are being possessed.

Archibald's original screenplay for The Innocents was based on the premise that the paranormal events depicted were legitimate. Displeased with Archibald's take on the material, director Jack Clayton appointed American writer Truman Capote to rework the script. Capote's rewrites incorporated psychological themes, resulting in a final work that suggests other alternatives to the plot. Filming took place partly on location at the Gothic mansion of Sheffield Park in Sussex, with additional shoots occurring at Shepperton Studios in Surrey. Shot in CinemaScope, The Innocents incorporated bold minimal lighting as well as deep focus, employed by cinematographer Freddie Francis to achieve a distinctive—and sometimes claustrophobic—atmosphere. The film also pioneered the use of synthesised electronic sound created by Daphne Oram.[6]

The Innocents received international distribution from the American film studio 20th Century Fox, and received its London premiere on 24 November 1961. It was released in the United States the following month on 15 December in Los Angeles and Christmas Day in New York City. The psychological underpinnings of the film's screenplay have resulted in it being the subject of numerous critical and scholarly essays, particularly in the area of film theory. Of the various film adaptations of James's work, The Innocents has received the most critical debate. It was selected by The Guardian as one of the 25 best horror films ever made.

In this lugubrious but brilliantly realized adaptation of Henry James' classic novella The Turn of the Screw, 19th century British governess Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr) arrives at a bleak mansion to take care of Flora (Pamela Franklin) and Miles (Martin Stephens), the wealthy household's two children. Outwardly the children are little darlings, but the governess begins to feel that there's something unwholesome behind those beatific smiles.

The Whip and the Body (1963)

Quote:The Whip and the Body (Italian: La frusta e il corpo) is a 1963 gothic horror film directed by Mario Bava under the alias "John M. Old". The film is about Kurt Menliff (Christopher Lee) who is ostracized by his father for his relationship with a servant girl and her eventual suicide. He later returns to reclaim his title and his former fiancée Nevenka (Daliah Lavi) who is now his brother's wife. Menliff is later found murdered, but the locals believe his ghost has returned to haunt the castle for revenge.

Italian censors removed the film from cinemas due to its sadomasochistic themes. The international cut features some significant changes, and runs for 77 minutes. It was released theatrically as What! and Night is the Phantom in the United States and United Kingdom, respectively.

Marred by controversy at the time of its release, this horror fantasy from Italy's legendary horror director Mario Bava centers on the twisted desires of a nobleman's son (Christopher Lee). Lee is ostracized by his father for his dalliances with a servant girl (who later commits suicide), but is allowed to return to the fold by his brother, whose lovely wife (Dahlia Lavi) immediately becomes the object of Lee's mad lust. Lee is later found murdered, along with several other victims from the surrounding village, leading superstitious locals to believe that Lee's evil spirit has returned to destroy them; the twist ending reveals the real evil at work. The kinky, sadomasochistic relationship between Lee and Lavi raised more than a few censors' eyebrows, leading to some harsh cuts.

Asylum (1972)

Quote:Asylum (also known as House of Crazies in subsequent US releases) is a 1972 British horror film made by Amicus Productions.[1] The film was directed by Roy Ward Baker, produced by Milton Subotsky, and scripted by Robert Bloch (who adapted four of his own short stories for the screenplay).[2]

Baker had considerable experience as a director of horror films as he had tackled Quatermass and The Pit, and Scars of Dracula. Robert Bloch, who wrote the script for Asylum based on a series of his own short stories, was also the author of the novel Psycho, which Alfred Hitchcock directed as a film.

It is a horror anthology film, one of several produced by Amicus during the 1960s and 1970s. Others were Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, Torture Garden, Tales from the Crypt, The House That Dripped Blood, The Vault of Horror, and From Beyond the Grave.

Shot in April 1972, the film was edited and set for release 15 weeks after the final day of shooting, premièring in July 1972 in the UK. The film had its North American début on 17 November 1972.

When Dr. Martin (Robert Powell) goes on a job interview at a British insane asylum, he learns that he must interview the asylum's inmates in order to be considered for the position. Dr. Rutherford (Patrick Magee), who is wheelchair-bound because of an assault by an inmate, tells Dr. Martin that he will consider him for the position if he can discover which of the inmates is Dr. Starr, a former head doctor at the asylum who suffered a nervous breakdown.

Frankenstein: The True Story (TV Movie 1973)

Quote:Frankenstein: The True Story is a 1973 British and American made-for-television horror film loosely based on the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. It was directed by Jack Smight, and the screenplay was written by novelist Christopher Isherwood and his longtime partner Don Bachardy.

The film stars Leonard Whiting as Victor Frankenstein, Jane Seymour as Prima, David McCallum as Henry Clerval, James Mason as Dr Polidori and Michael Sarrazin as the Creature. James Mason's wife, Clarissa Kaye-Mason also appeared in the film.

Surprisingly good adaptation of the Isherwood screenplay, though not sticking exactly with the original novel, this is an incredible spectacle, with good special effects. Not done in the classic manner, this has been dubbed more of an intellectual's horror movie. The creature is by no means the patchwork quilt beastie we are used to seeing when thinking of Frankenstein. Instead, he is a very handsome Victorian-era man whose physical decomposition brings about an agony of spirit as well as physical adjustments. Michael Sarrazin's monster is brilliant and sympathetic.
