unsure Loneliness , Depression and Suicide Rates Are Rising Sharply in Young Americans

Since the late 2000s, the mental health of teens and young adults in the U.S. has declined dramatically. That’s the broad conclusion of a new study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology.

Between 2009 and 2017, rates of depression among kids ages 14 to 17 increased by more than 60%, the study found. The increases were nearly as steep among those ages 12 to 13 (47%) and 18 to 21 (46%), and rates roughly doubled among those ages 20 to 21. In 2017—the latest year for which federal data are available—more than one in eight Americans ages 12 to 25 experienced a major depressive episode, the study found.

The same trends held when the researchers analyzed the data on suicides, attempted suicides and “serious psychological distress”—a term applied to people who score high on a test that measures feelings of sadness, nervousness and hopelessness. Among young people, rates of suicidal thoughts, plans and attempts all increased significantly, and in some cases more than doubled, between 2008 and 2017, the study found.

These findings were based on data collected from more than 600,000 people by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an annual nationwide mental-health survey conducted by a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

For young adults, drugs and distracted driving are well-recognized health threats. Far less attention is paid to loneliness.

But loneliness is common -- and it is a particular problem for people aged 18 to 24, a new study
suggests.

"We have this stereotype of the lonely old person in poor health, and the robust, socially active young person," said James Maddux, a senior scholar at George Mason University's Center for the Advancement of Well-Being, in Fairfax, Va.

"But that's not what this study found," added Maddux, who was not involved in the research.

The researchers found that of more than 1,200 patients at primary care offices, 20 percent said they at least sometimes felt lonely, isolated and "left out." Overall, those people gave lower ratings to their physical and mental health.

Loneliness was most common among patients younger than 25 -- with one-third reporting those feelings. In contrast, that was true for only 11 percent of adults older than 65, the investigators found.

such as ...

"While not all the evidence is consistent, a substantial amount of research has found associations between heavy technology use and poor mental health outcomes among adolescents and young adults."

self indulgence and instant gratification and the selfishness and spiritual blindness it produces makes individuals miserable in the long run.

It's from autism spectrum disorders.

A young person needs to belong somewhere doing things that build
up their life prospects and self esteem.

Autism is absolutely debilitating.

Thanks to big pharma 20% of young men are autistic.

International agreements were made.
Nations agreed to reduce their populations without telling them.

There is not enough room in Africa and Australia to fit us all in during the next inter-glacial period which is about to start.

The Leaders of the world know. The best and brightest have already been recruited. We are the losers they are going to kill off.

It is a 100 year plan that has been in motion since the late 1990's.

That is why they are pushing socialism and minimalist living so hard. Preparing the minds of the next generations to accept what they will have to put up with. There will only be just enough to go around during the next mini ice-age which might last the whole 12,000 years.

Only Africa (which is being secured by the western nations and China right now) and Australia will be able to be inhabited.

Yeah actually, about that stuff about "securing" africa, no need for that. Also, you got that wrong, since the invaders will have to fuckoff.

Yep.

autism and other dissociative disorders which engender social awkwardness may play a role , but statistically , it doesnt figure that its just an autism thing , there is a broader sociological dynamic at play that is influencing the younger generations. i already cited that technology quote , and i do think that plays a much larger role than any single disease or disorder , possibly with the exception of depression .

fine , but wheres the evidence of a coming ice age ? arent average global temperatures currently increasing , and the attendant perma frost and glacial melt to accompany it evidence that an ice age is not in the cards for at least a number of years yet ?

I seriously think it has to do with our culture today.

For example.... Sex.

I feel that plays a huge part in it.

"sexual freedom".... the sexual revolution.... from the 1960's...

That is when we started to give in to sin.

People then started to see each other as sex objects....... And now we have become hateful of each other.... down to the very core of our society..... the male/female partnership.

Divorce sky rocketed in the last few decades since the "sex revolution"

It is now commonplace for broken up and dysfunctional families.

It MUST change!
