WASHINGTON (AP) - AP sources: AG Sessions will rescind policy that allowed legal marijuana to flourish without federal intervention.

Trump Administration Taking Step That Could Threaten Marijuana Legalization Movement

The Trump administration on Thursday will free federal prosecutors to more aggressively enforce marijuana laws, effectively threatening to undermine the legalization movement that has spread to six states, most recently California.

The Justice Department is expected to rescind an Obama-era policy of discouraging federal prosecutors from bringing charges of marijuana-related crimes in states that had legalized sales of the drug.

It was not immediately clear whether the administration intends to carry out a federal crackdown on marijuana dispensaries, or is merely rattling its saber.

Senator Cory Gardner, Republican of Colorado, reacted angrily to the news. He accused Mr. Sessions of violating promises had made and threatened retaliation.

British Socialist party.

She even calls protests, "riots".
-------------

Emily Thornberry Says Labour Cannot Back Iran Protesters Because It's Unclear Who Has 'White Hats'

Emily Thornberry has claimed Labour is unable to back demonstrators protesting against the Iranian government because it is unclear who has ‘the white hats’.

Jeremy Corbyn has been under increasing pressure to speak out over the unrest, which was sparked by economic hardships facing citizens and left more than 20 people dead, with 450 arrested in Tehran.

Downing Street warned Iranian leaders that “Britain was watching” and Thornberry issued a statement earlier this week calling for the authorities to show restraint.

But she told Nick Robinson’s Political Thinking podcast that Labour was unable to speak out in support of the protests because it was unclear who was in the right.

“For example, with these current riots, sometimes they are...calling to reinstate the monarchy, sometimes they’re calling out against the Khomeni, sometimes they’re calling for Khomeni, sometimes they’re calling for the price of eggs.

RE: We are witnessing the rise of authoritarianism on a chilling scale
People being denied their rights by religious entities. Running theme.
-------------

18 months after assisted death became legal, many Canadians still denied MAiD - mostly by publicly-funded, religious-based institutions

On the night that 83-year-old Barry Hyman was to receive a doctor-assisted death, his daughters were on edge, petrified that at any moment someone would burst through the door and stop them from granting their father his final wish.

Enfeebled by a stroke and diagnosed with lung cancer, Mr. Hyman had asked to die at home.

But his home at the time was a publicly funded Jewish nursing home in Vancouver whose board forbade assisted deaths on site, saying the newly legal practice violated the values and traditions of the Jewish faith.

Instead of focusing on their goodbyes, the Hyman family spent the last moments of Barry's life worrying that they would be discovered and prevented from completing a legal medical procedure inside a publicly funded care facility.

It is not clear if these institutions enjoy the same Charter-protected religious freedoms as individuals when it comes to refusing assisted deaths because the issue has not yet been tested in court.

In the vast majority of cases, such patients are transferred to another facility to die. But it isn't always easy to find a place to send them.

Canada's religious health-care organizations, which have been tending to the sick in this country since long before Medicare, say they are doing their best to support terminally ill patients without betraying their own faith, offering options like palliative sedation to make patients' natural deaths as painless as possible.

But when it comes to actual physician-assisted deaths, religious facilities – be they Jewish, Baptist, Catholic or otherwise – are refusing to allow the practice on their grounds.

Biggest myth must be that people in authoritarian countries love their Government.

RE: We are witnessing the rise of authoritarianism on a chilling scale
Fascism in a nutshell. Uniformity, conformity.
--------------

“We lost the best of our youth and our infrastructure. It cost us a lot of money and a lot of sweat, for generations. But in exchange, we won a healthier and more homogeneous society in the true sense. This homogeneity is the basis for national unity – homogeneity in beliefs, ideology, traditions, customs, perceptions and outlook.” - Bashar Assad

Assad's Speech About A Homogeneous Society In Syria Represents A New Kind Of Hitlerism

Assad's remarks about the homogeneity of Syrian society provoked scorn and fury among the opposition and members of the Syrian diaspora. Academic Najib George Awad, a Syrian living in the United States, published a scathing article in the London-based Qatari daily Al-Arabi Al-Jadid in which he compared Assad's comments about Syrian society becoming homogeneous to Nazi ideology, and warned against the birth of a new Hitlerism in light of the world's silence following Assad's statements.

He also expressed concern about a global trend among leaders, including in the U.S., to promote social homogeneity in their countries.

In the 1930s, when the Nazi Party rose to power in Germany, the leader of the new Nazi regime, Adolf Hitler, repeated in several speeches his philosophical ideas about the meaning of 'the [German] nation' and the idea of 'the pure people'... Hitler spoke of the need to purge German society of the social classes that didn't contribute to the creation of a 'homogeneous society' and a new Germany. Hitler spread this discourse throughout Nazi Germany and eliminated anyone who disagreed with him or opposed him.

He also committed one of the worst crimes in human history [by using] crematoria to purge the race and society... and literally burn hundreds of thousands of Jews and other non-Arian minorities.

Assad has carried out the most heinous crimes... on Syrian soil for seven years, while repeatedly using discourse replete with Nazi ideas that we had thought had become extinct.

In this global context of reviving Hitlerism and spreading it throughout the world, Bashar Al-Assad's words are only part of a broader, bleaker and more criminal picture, which is killing humanity [and extends from] the Al-Muhajireen Palace [the presidential palace in Damascus] to the White House."

The Fake News Awards, those going to the most corrupt & biased of the Mainstream Media, will be presented to the losers on Wednesday, January 17th, rather than this coming Monday. The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!

What happens when the state gets involved in these matters. I would have thought a $135 fine would be more in line with offence.

Heartbreaking to see which Americans describe themselves as "libertarian" (there is nothing liberal about them). They very rarely live up to such high ideals.
-------------------Colorado shooting suspect was an Iraq War vet who posted alt-right ‘Pepe’ memes on social media
Matthew Riehl, the man accused of killing a suburban Denver sheriff’s deputy and wounding four others, is a veteran of the Iraq War who is also fond of posting alt-right memes on his Facebook account.
Forbes writer J.J. MacNab discovered Riehl’s Facebook page, in which he identifies himself as “Matt Gonzo,” and where he has posted multiple memes featuring Pepe the Frog, the cartoon that has been appropriated as a symbol for white nationalists. As the Associated Press has reported, Riehl seemed to have a grudge against local police officers, and posted multiple complaints about the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department on YouTube.
Specifically, the AP notes that Riehl in a December video called for “the firing of Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock” and attacked him “in highly personal terms.” Riehl also said that during that video that he would be running as a “libertarian” candidate for Douglas County Sheriff.

These issues can be divided in to how the state treats LGBT and how individuals treat LGBT.

While people have their own prejudices, the state shouldn't discriminate.

India's top court to review past verdict on gay sex ban

India's Supreme Court on Monday agreed to reconsider its 2013 decision that criminalises consensual sexual relations between same sex adults, a victory for equal rights campaigners.

The court said a larger group of judges will re-examine the constitutional validity of Section 377 - a colonial-era law that prohibits "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal" - widely interpreted to refer to homosexual sex.

"What is natural to one may not be natural to others," the top court said on Monday. "A section of people or individuals who exercise their choice should never remain in a state of fear."

Although the law banning homosexuality is rarely enforced in India, it is used to intimidate, harass, blackmail and extort money from gay people, activists say.

With the rise of laws against poorly-defined "Hate Speech" and talk of jail for those discussing Climate Denial, I would say the rise of authoritarianism is very chilling indeed.

Let India be India!

Anyone in the major cities in India who is gay goes about pretty freely. The Caste system is more of an employment barrier for most.

In the rural areas, they're no different than being gay in any hardcore redneck state. People are free to leave, and Indians find it easy to settle abroad, so why should India be beholden to western ideals and laws?

You know what's REALLY authoritarian? Demanding every last country on the planet have the exact same laws regardless of their history and cultural norms.

Let them emigrate rather than jail them or throw them off buildings is what I say.

The entire purpose of having a state at all is for the state to discriminate and make choices that will give the most benefit to it's people.
