Polish parliament starts work on further restricting abortion

Poland's parliament has started work on a new abortion law, in the conservative government second bid to tighten rules that are already among Europe's toughest.

The new bill would ban abortions due to irreversible damage to the foetus, removing the main legal recourse Polish women have to obtain a termination.

PiS, supported by the powerful Catholic Church, has been pushing to enforce religious values in public life, with the party leader and the country's paramount politician, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, long saying that abortions due to damage to a foetus must be outlawed.

RE: We are witnessing the rise of authoritarianism on a chilling scale
A new global generation now speaks perfect English

PewDiePie lives in Brighton but — as the faint accent in his videos reveals — he is a Swede called Felix Kjellberg. Born in 1989, he represents the first global generation in which tens of millions of people from outside the English-speaking world speak perfect English. That shift is ominous for the US and UK. Thanks to English, these countries have dominated the global conversation. Their entertainment, media, university and tech sectors bestraddle the world. But now the PewDiePie generation, machine translation, Brexit and Trump are combining to threaten their dominance.

A few non-native speakers have always managed to sneak into the global English conversation. But most ambitious foreigners were held back because they spoke not English, but Globish.

Just as populists are trying to roll back globalisation, along comes the first global generation shaped by the internet, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening of China.

India, for the first time ever, has a new generation of urbanites whose mother tongue is English. In Egypt, some children at private English-language schools now struggle to speak Arabic, reports anthropologist Noha Roushdy. These kids are being trained to be heard abroad.

And the production line of perfect English-speakers hums ever faster. More and more universities around the world offer courses in English. The Netherlands sets the pace in Europe, followed by the Scandinavians. These countries are now attracting world-class foreign academics.

Amsterdam and Copenhagen are already effectively bilingual. Berlin and Paris aren’t far behind.

Next, the US and UK will lose their dominance of media.

Everyone now piously preaches multilingualism, but it’s not going to happen. About 1.5 billion people are learning English, roughly 10 times more than are learning French, Chinese, Spanish, German, Italian and Japanese put together.

Iran bans English from being taught in primary schools

Iran has banned teaching the English language in primary schools, calling the subject a "cultural invasion".

The education ministry "envisages strengthening Persian language skills and Iranian Islamic culture of pupils at the primary school stage", its secretary told state media.

English is a foreign language option for many at secondary level, which begins at the age of 12, but its popularity has led to classes being offered by some schools much earlier.

Many middle class families already take their kids to independent language institutions after school hours because the methods used to teach English at normal schools aren't very successful.

Yes, the idea that "regime change" in dictatorships shouldn't be a priority is ridiculous. Authoritarianism is the root cause of war, terror, famine, nearly every evil we face.

"Regime change" doesn't mean sending in troops. It can mean everything from isolation and deterrence to encourage liberalization and empower opposition to simply having clear human rights standards reflected in policy.

And even though chaos may come when a dictatorship falls, postponing that moment only makes it worse. The longer a dictatorship is in power, the worse the eventual fall and aftermath. Civil society is razed. Opposition is crushed. The price keeps going up.

authoritarianism is the intellectual name for greed

He features a lot, so I'll give Trump a + when it's due.

You already have a high threshold in the US. You should check out the UK (below). Eek.

Your estate will owe tax at 40% on anything above the £325,000 inheritance tax threshold when you die (or 36% if you leave at least 10% to a charity).

‘Death Tax’ Cut Means Farms Can Stay in the Family, Trump Tells Farmers

American farmers will be able to keep their estates in the family because of the recently approved tax bill’s reduction of the death tax, President Donald Trump told the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual meeting on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee.

Trump’s comments about the reduced estate tax — also known as the “death tax” — drew a standing ovation at the Farm Bureau’s national gathering, and it was a boast Trump seemed to relish making.

The address Monday was the first by a U.S. president to the group since 1992, and Trump stressed things he has recently signed into law, including tax cuts and deregulation, that he said would propel the U.S. farming community.

The estate tax was especially unpopular with farmers, who often seek to give their sizable agricultural properties to children. The death tax was not imposed on the first $5.5 million in assets, such as bonds and property, but Trump and the Republican-led Congress doubled that threshold to $11 million.

Where you get your sexual prejudices from.
---------------

How 'heterosexuality' was invented

The 1901 Dorland’s Medical Dictionary defined heterosexuality as an “abnormal or perverted appetite toward the opposite sex.” More than two decades later, in 1923, Merriam Webster’s dictionary similarly defined it as “morbid sexual passion for one of the opposite sex.” It wasn’t until 1934 that heterosexuality was graced with the meaning we’re familiar with today: “manifestation of sexual passion for one of the opposite sex; normal sexuality.”

It seems obvious that different-genital intercourse has existed for as long as humans have been around – indeed, we wouldn’t have survived this long without it. But this rebuttal assumes that heterosexuality is the same thing as reproductive intercourse. It isn’t.

There have always been sexual instincts throughout the animal world (sex). But at a specific point in time, humans attached meaning to these instincts (sexuality). When humans talk about heterosexuality, we’re talking about the second thing.

Prior to 1868, there were no heterosexuals,” writes Blank. Neither were there homosexuals. It hadn’t yet occurred to humans that they might be “differentiated from one another by the kinds of love or sexual desire they experienced.” Sexual behaviours, of course, were identified and catalogued, and often times, forbidden. But the emphasis was always on the act, not the agent.

For Krafft-Ebing, normal sexual desire was situated within a larger context of procreative utility, an idea that was in keeping with the dominant sexual theories of the West. In the Western world, long before sex acts were separated into the categories hetero/homo, there was a different ruling binary: procreative or non-procreative. The Bible, for instance, condemns homosexual intercourse for the same reason it condemns masturbation: because life-bearing seed is spilled in the act.

Ideas and words are often products of their time. That is certainly true of heterosexuality, which was borne out of a time when American life was becoming more regularised. As Blank argues, the invention of heterosexuality corresponds with the rise of the middle class.

Because the increasing public awareness of these sexual practices paralleled the influx of lower classes into cities, “urban sexual misconduct was typically, if inaccurately, blamed” on the working class and poor, says Blank. It was important for an emerging middle class to differentiate itself from such excess. The bourgeois family needed a way to protect its members “from aristocratic decadence on the one side and the horrors of the teeming city on the other”. This required “systematic, reproducible, universally applicable systems for social management that could be implemented on a large scale”.

Yes, the last thread was 150 pages long and their was lots on western support of oppressors. It is hard to understand why a British Government is involved in the subjugation of Yemenis.

Western Governments behaviour does not in anyway excuse the conduct of Assad, Hussein and Gaddafi. These are people whose cliques have enslaved entire countries for decades, making it illegal to replace them democratically. We would not accept this for ourselves and I do not accept it for Arabs or anyone else. Cheers

Students told efforts to collect signatures for Putin's re-election bid would “ostensibly play an important role in end-of-the-year exams"

An activist based in St. Petersburg has sounded the alarm on a local university that is reportedly forcing students to collect signatures for President Vladimir Putin’s 2018 re-election bid.

First-year students at the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University were reportedly ordered to collect at least 14 signatures for Putin’s nomination, local activist Oksana Borisova wrote on the Russian Vkontakte social network earlier in the day.

The students were informed their efforts would “ostensibly play an important role in end-of-the-year exams," she added.

The university provost denied the accuracy of Borisova’s allegations in an interview with the Rosbalt news agency.

Dmitry Kuznetsov, the provost, did confirm Borisova’s claim that the rector is a member of the ruling United Russia party.

Putin compared the communist ideology with Christianity

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Moral Code of the builder of communism "primitive excerpt from the Bible," and compared the content of Lenin's body in the Mausoleum with the Christian tradition of venerating relics.

"Maybe I'll say something now that someone will not like it, but I'll say what I think." First, faith, she always accompanied us. "She strengthened when our country, the people was especially hard, were completely hard theomachistic years, when priests were destroyed, churches were destroyed, but at the same time they created a new religion, "the head of state said in a conversation with journalist Andrei Kondrashov. His film "Valaam" shows on January 14 the TV channel "Russia 1".

http://tass.ru/obschestvo/4872596

Moral Code of the Builder of Communism. Moral Code of the Builder of Communism was a set of twelve codified moral rules in the Soviet Union which every member of the Communist Party of the USSR and every Komsomol member were supposed to follow.

Twelve rules of the Builder of Communism

• Loyalty to Communism, and love of the socialist Motherland and other socialist countries.

• Conscious work for the good of the society: One who doesn't work, doesn't get to eat.

• Care for the collective property, as well as the multiplying of this property.

• High consciousness of the social responsibilities, and intolerance to the violation of the social interests.

• Collectivism and comradery: All for one and one for all.

• Humane relationships between human beings: One human being is a friend, a comrade and a brother to another human being.

• Honesty, ethical cleanliness, as well as simplicity and modesty both in private and public life.

• Mutual respect in the family, and care for the upbringing of the children.

• Intolerance to the injustice, social parasitism, unfairness, careerism, and acquisitiveness.

• Friendship and brotherhood with all the nations of the USSR, intolerance to all racial and national dislike.

• Intolerance to the enemies of communism, peace and freedom of peoples of the world.

• Brotherly solidarity to all workers of all countries, and nations.

RE: We are witnessing the rise of authoritarianism on a chilling scale
Putin’s Trolls Are Targeting Trump’s GOP Critics

While the vast majority of the attacks from the 600 Twitter accounts tracked in real time by the Hamilton 68 dashboard are aimed at Democrats, the trolls also turn their sights on Republicans who sometimes stand up to Trump. Repeat targets have included Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. National security adviser H.R. McMaster has also been a target. But no Republican has faced more persistent wrath from the Russian-linked accounts than McCain, says Bret Schafer, an analyst for the Alliance for Securing Democracy, a group of national-security experts behind the dashboard working to expose Kremlin meddling in US politics.

Schafer says that the trolls tend to spread disinformation from far-right American sites rather than content from explicitly Russian ones. “GatewayPundit.com and TruePundit.com—sites to the right of Breitbart—those are our frequent flyers,” he says. “The Russians are latching onto hyperpartisan content.”

Another longtime Republican critic of both Russia and Trump was briefly targeted by the Hamilton-monitored Russian troll network in early January. Mitt Romney, a potential candidate to run for Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch’s seat this November, was the talk of the dashboard accounts on Jan. 2, after Hatch announced his retirement, and #neverromney registered as a trending hashtag on Hamilton the next day. But the accounts soon turned their attention to the fallout from Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury book.

The most prominent theme recently among the Russian-backed accounts is a growing campaign to discredit the Justice Department and FBI, Schafer says. These attacks increased from around 5% of links shared in September to about 15% of the links in December. The trolls push a “deep state” narrative to undermine the agencies, as well as attack Mueller and his Russia investigation directly.
