Poland: Homophobic governor calls on Lublin mayor to cancel the city's first Pride

LGBTI rights groups organized the parade for 13 October. It would have been Lublin’s first Marsz Równości’ (Equality March).

However, the milestone event for the LGBTI community couldn’t go ahead as local authorities cited ‘security concerns’.

According to local reports, the regional governor Przemysław Czarnek, appointed by the ruling and anti-LGBTI Law & Justice (PiS) party, called on Mayor Krzysztof Żuk to cancel the event.

Czarnek said the march promoted ‘sexual behaviour incompatible with nature’ and ‘pedophilia’. He also accused equality demonstrators of ‘deviance’ and ‘perversion’.

Polish Ombudsman @Adbodnar: Banning the Equality March in Lublin is a gross violation of human rights.

BREAKING: The Washington Supreme Court just struck down the death penalty, citing racial bias.

This makes Washington the 20th state in the nation to outlaw the death penalty. We won't stop fighting until it's struck down everywhere in America.

BREAKING — INITIAL ASSESSMENT OF TURKISH POLICE IS THAT SAUDI JOURNALIST KHASHOGGI WAS KILLED AT SAUDI CONSULATE IN ISTANBUL - TWO TURKISH SOURCES

Saudi journalist 'killed inside consulate' – Turkish sources

Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of Riyadh, had gone to the building in Istanbul seeking documents for his marriage

Turkish authorities believe that the prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who disappeared four days ago after entering Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, was killed inside the consulate, two Turkish sources said on Saturday.

“The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul. We believe that the murder was premeditated and the body was subsequently moved out of the consulate,” one Turkish official told Reuters.

The sources did not say how they believed the killing was carried out.

Who are the 15 Saudi tourists falsely accused of killing Khashoggi?

Several pictures surfaced of the tourists at the Ataturk airport, in the regular commercial airlines' terminal, and not the one for private jets. They were also shown to be regular tourists, who do not work as crew members.

Maher Mutreb, one of the accused Saudi 'hit squad' in Istanbul, appeared to be an intelligence officer who was based at Saudi embassy in London. Saudi exile who knew him socially in UK recognized him. "It is crazy if he was part of a murder team."

Germany's AfD sparks outcry at far-right child informer plan

German justice minister Katarina Barley has sharply condemned an online scheme launched by the far-right AfD party to get schoolchildren to inform on teachers who are politically partial.

The far-right party entered parliament for the first time this year, becoming the biggest opposition party.

Its informant site started in Hamburg and is likely to be launched elsewhere.

Ms Barley said it was "a method of dictators" and one union leader likened it to a "tool from the Middle Ages".

Comparisons have also been drawn with spying practices by the Nazis in World War Two and afterwards by the Stasi security service in communist East Germany.

U.S. border ban on Canadian cannabis workers lifted

Canadians who work in the domestic cannabis industry will be allowed free entry to the United States according to an update made quietly on Tuesday to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s policy on cannabis and the border.

The update came with little fanfare but it indicates an enormous shift in a policy stance that had generated fears that thousands of legally employed Canadians would be banned from the U.S. for life post-legalization.

“A Canadian citizen working in or facilitating the proliferation of the legal marijuana industry in Canada, coming to the U.S. for reasons unrelated to the marijuana industry will generally be admissible to the U.S.,” the updated statement reads.

Canadians with criminal histories related to pre-legalization cannabis — or those who have admitted past cannabis use to CBP officers — will still be eligible for border bans.

53,000 voter registration applications on hold in Georgia as election nears, report says

More than 53,000 voter registration applications – most of them black voters - have been put on hold in Georgia, according to an Associated Press report.

The report comes less than a month away from the Nov. 6 midterm elections and days after the registration deadline for those races.

Georgia’s tightly-contested governor’s race between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp will be decided in less than a month with the general election on Nov. 6.

Kemp is the secretary of state, who is tasked with running Georgia’s election system.

Supreme Court Makes It Harder for Tribal North Dakotans to Vote

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a lower-court order requiring voters in North Dakota to present certain forms of identification and proof of their residential address in order to cast a ballot in next month’s elections. A case challenging this requirement on behalf of the state’s sizable Native American populations alleged that the requirement would disenfranchise tribal residents, many of whom lack the proper identification and do not have residential addresses on their identification cards.

The Supreme Court’s order will likely make it harder for Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, considered the most vulnerable Democrat in the Senate, to retain her seat in November. Heitkamp won her seat by less than 3,000 votes in 2012 with strong backing from Native Americans.

The Republican-led effort to suppress voting rights - i.e. prevent Democratic-leaning minorities from casting a ballot

When it comes to the nationwide, comprehensive, carefully planned Republican effort to suppress the votes of people who are likely to vote Democratic, particularly racial minorities, there is a menu of techniques Republicans employ — voter ID laws, voter purges, limiting early voting, closing polling places in heavily minority neighborhoods, and racial and partisan gerrymandering.

Kemp isn’t just overseeing the process, he’s apparently also doing everything he can to keep as many Democrats as possible from the polls in November.

Italy's Matteo Salvini says 'little ethnic shops' should close by 9pm

Italy’s far-right interior minister has come under fire for a proposal that would force what he calls “little ethnic shops” to close by 9pm.

Matteo Salvini added the measure to his immigrant-targeting security decree, arguing late-night grocery stores, mostly run by foreigners, are “a meeting place for drug deals and people who raise hell”.

Mauro Bussoni, the general secretary of Confesercenti, a retail association, said: “You can’t make a law that discriminates some entrepreneurs over others.

Andrea Marcucci, a politician from the centre-left Democratic party, said imposing curfews was among the premises of “a regime”.

If the proposal became law, an industry source said, it should also apply to Italian-owned outlets, including bars, while security measures must also extend to foreign business owners.

Salvini’s security decree, unveiled in September, includes plans to abolish key protections for immigrants and make it easier for them to be deported.

On Thursday, he reiterated a plan to hire 10,000 more police officers, an initiative funded by money that previously paid for migrant reception and integration projects.

Salvini’s latest proposal comes after Luigi Di Maio, his coalition partner, said measures would be introduced by the end of the year to limit Sunday trading in an attempt to preserve family traditions.

One of them will do something mad.
Probably Turkey. Or Russia.

Triumph of the strongman has worrying echoes of the Thirties

Across much of the world a new style of leader is emerging to fill the void left by US isolationism and discontent with democracy.

The Saudi snatch squad that flew into Istanbul to silence a critic of government policy was acting on orders from above. It is still fuzzy as to whether they were following a direct command from the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, or from someone in the court eager to please him. And unclear too whether Jamal Khashoggi was supposed to be killed, frightened or dispatched home. What is plain though is this: established international norms are being shredded in a way that we haven’t seen since the 1930s, the age of dictators big, small and tinpot.

It is now possible to stray into a foreign country and use violence to avenge a personal slight, to act with impunity and yet demand respect.

RE: We are witnessing the rise of authoritarianism on a chilling scale
The Increasingly Menacing Message of Donald Trump's Rallies

Among the things I heard the President of the United States do: make fun of a female candidate in Iowa by giving her a derogatory nickname. Accuse a U.S. senator of being a “drunk.” Claim that Hillary Clinton engaged in a conspiracy with Russia to rig the election (which she lost). He called the European Union a “brutal” alliance “formed to take advantage of us.” He attacked American libel laws and the World Trade Organization.

What’s happened since his election, Trump said in Pennsylvania, “has been the greatest revolution ever to take place in our country,” or maybe even anywhere in the world. His victory “superseded even Andrew Jackson.” “America,” he said, “is winning like never before.”

The biggest difference between Trump and any other American President, however, is not the bragging. It’s the cult of personality he has built around himself and which he insists upon at his rallies. Political leaders are called onstage to praise the President in terms that would make a feudal courtier blush, and they’re not empty words. These are the kinds of tributes I have heard in places like Uzbekistan.

“Is he not the best President we have ever had?” the Mississippi senator Cindy Hyde-Smith enthused. (Trump then praised her for voting “with me one hundred per cent of the time.”) In Erie on Wednesday, a Republican congressman, Michael Kelly, gave the most sycophantic speech of the ones I listened to this month. Trump, he yelled to the crowd, is “the strongest President we have seen in our lifetime.” Addressing Trump, he said, “You are the best! You are the best!”

In Trump’s telling at these rallies, he is the hero of every story. All ideas, big or small, flow through him now that he is President.

Every single rally included multiple attacks on the media and “fake news.” In Mississippi, the press bashing began seconds into the speech; in Pennsylvania, it took seven minutes; in Minnesota, ten. Deadbeat allies, rapacious foreigners ripping us off, and murderous gang members from MS-13 also figured in every one of the speeches.

It’s the hate, and the sense of actual menace that the President is trying to convey to his supporters. Democrats aren’t just wrong in the manner of traditional partisan differences; they are scary, bad, evil, radical, dangerous. Trump and Trump alone stands between his audiences and disaster.

Australia seeks to ban schools from expelling gay students

Australia aims to ban private or religious schools from expelling students on the basis of their sexuality, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Saturday.

Australia's parliament voted to legalise same-sex marriage in December after a nationwide postal survey returned an overwhelming majority in favour of the unions.

Morrison said the government was working through its responses to the recommendations of a review panel to examine if the change to the law had restricted religious freedom.

"Our government does not support expulsion of students from religious non-state schools on the basis of their sexuality," he added.
