United Nations urges Australia to evacuate offshore refugees over health crisis

The United Nations has asked Australia to urgently evacuate detainees from the Pacific islands of Nauru and Papua New Guinea, saying it bears responsibility for their deteriorating health conditions.

Worsening mental health has left some of the children among the refugees in a "semi-comatose state", unable to eat, drink or talk, humanitarian group Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which was ejected from Nauru, has said.

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Friday that more than 1,400 people are still being held on both islands, which have hosted Australia-bound migrants and asylum-seekers since 2013.

The refugees were transferred to the islands after being intercepted trying to reach Australia by boat, a policy widely criticised by the United Nations and other rights groups.

Poland: Homophobic governor calls on Lublin mayor to cancel the city's first Pride

LGBTI rights groups organized the parade for 13 October. It would have been Lublin’s first Marsz Równości’ (Equality March).

However, the milestone event for the LGBTI community couldn’t go ahead as local authorities cited ‘security concerns’.

According to local reports, the regional governor Przemysław Czarnek, appointed by the ruling and anti-LGBTI Law & Justice (PiS) party, called on Mayor Krzysztof Żuk to cancel the event.

Czarnek said the march promoted ‘sexual behaviour incompatible with nature’ and ‘pedophilia’. He also accused equality demonstrators of ‘deviance’ and ‘perversion’.

Polish police use tear gas to protect gay rights march

Polish police used tear gas and a water cannon against right-wing extremists who were trying to block the first equality parade in the city of Lublin in eastern Poland.

More than 1,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights activists with rainbow-colored flags and banners gathered Saturday in Lublin for the parade, while around 300 right-wing opponents stood in the march's way. Police used tear gas, concussion grenades and high-pressured water to disperse them.

The right-wing protesters pelted police with stones and dispersed, but some small groups tried to get through the police cordon that was protecting the march.

Lesbian couple in Poland can finally get a birth certificate for their child

Lesbian parents in Poland can register their child, the country’s highest court ruled on Thursday.

Importantly, the ruling was celebrated as the first of its kind in conservative and deeply religious Poland.

The Polish woman and her partner first tried to register their child for a birth certificate in 2015, according to local media. Their son was born in London in 2014.

Local administration rejected their application, however, and the couple took the case to court.

The Supreme Administrative Court ruled the couple could register their child.

I downloaded some American TV to watch.
The curse words are bleeped.
What the **** is with that?
Even words like d***.

I dont think I could watch TV with the curse words bleeped.
**** that.

SyFy and USA Will Now Be Dropping F-Bombs on Televsion

SyFy and USA, both networks owned by NBCUniversal (a subsidiary of Comcast), are now throwing caution to the wind and will be dropping f-bombs without censoring them on air, and they already started to let them fly earlier this year.

Previously, swearing on SyFy and USA stuck to the guidelines laid out by the Federal Communications Commission, but as a basic cable channel, their Standards and Practices division was not actually beholden to follow those rules strictly. Instead, they answer to their advertisers, who traditionally don’t like it when things get controversial on television programming, and that includes salty language, especially when it comes to network television like NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX.

The word “s***” has been thrown around a lot more on networks like FX, AMC, and Comedy Central. The latter was even the first to bring uncensored usage of “f***” to basic cable by creating their late night programming block called “The Secret Stash,” which began with the airing of the R-rated film adaptation South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. They don’t have that block anymore, but their late night programming still airs the uncensored versions of movies and stand-up specials.

The only thing holding back basic cable networks from using what is considered to be more vulgar language is their advertisers.

British television spouts off what would be considered vulgar language all the time, at least in their later programming hours. Meanwhile, American television still dips audio, bleeps curse words or dubs over vulgar language. It can be very jarring and really takes you out of the moment.

Trump Jr. retweets unsubstantiated claim on missing Saudi journalist

Donald Trump Jr. retweeted an unsubstantiated claim on Friday insinuating missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is a terrorism sympathizer.

The series of tweets that Trump Jr. retweeted Friday included a post by Patrick Poole, who according to his Twitter profile is a national security and terrorism correspondent for PJ Media, a conservative-leaning collaborative news and commentary blog formerly known as Pajamas Media.
In his tweet, Poole shared images of a decades-old newspaper article written by Khashoggi about the mujahedeen.

Khashoggi covered al Qaeda as a foreign correspondent in Afghanistan and Sudan and was well known for his several interviews with Osama bin Laden.

Sean Davis, co-founder of The Federalist, retweeted Poole's post with a comment claiming Iranian influence over the news media's reporting on Khashoggi, implying an effort by Iran to damage US-Saudi relations.

Trump Jr. then retweeted Davis' comment.

US votes against UN resolution condemning gay sex death penalty, joining Iraq and Saudi Arabia

The US is one of just 13 countries to have voted against a United Nations resolution condemning the death penalty for having gay sex.

Although the vote passed, America joined countries such as China, Iraq and Saudi Arabia in opposing the move.

The Human Rights Council resolution condemned the “imposition of the death penalty as a sanction for specific forms of conduct, such as apostasy, blasphemy, adultery and consensual same-sex relations”.

It attacked the use of execution against persons with “mental or intellectual disabilities, persons below 18 years of age at the time of the commission of the crime, and pregnant women”.

The US supported two failed amendments put forward by Russia, which stated the death penalty was not necessarily “a human rights violation” and that it is not a form of torture, but can lead to it “in some cases”.

Big gains for green parties in Bavaria, Luxembourg and Brussels

In Bavaria the Greens came in first in the state’s seven biggest cities, polling around 30 percent there. Overall, they vanquished the Social Democrats (SPD) and far-right Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) to finish second to the Christian Social Union (CSU).

In Luxembourg two Green parties (the traditional Greens and a pirate party) won a combined 23 percent, behind the center-right CSV on around 27 percent of the vote.

In local ballots in Belgium, Greens (Ecolo-Groen) finished second in Brussels city elections, and may yet take the mayoralty as part of a new left-wing coalition. Overall the Greens finished first in four Brussels Region districts, including the EU district of Ixelles, and won up to 29 percent of the vote in other districts.

Socialists lost nearly everywhere this weekend. In Bavaria, the SPD attracted just one in 10 voters. That’s down by half since 2014, and by two-thirds since 1998. The Luxembourg Socialist Workers Party achieved its worst result in a century, and after running Antwerp for decades Social Democrats won only 11 percent to come in a dismal third place.

National conservatism

National conservatism is a variant of conservatism that concentrates more on national interests and upholding cultural or ethnic identity than most other conservatives.

National conservative parties are "socially traditional" and support the traditional family and social stability. According to the Austrian political scientist Sieglinde Rosenberger, "national conservatism praises the family as a home and a center of identity, solidarity and emotion."Many national conservatives are thus social conservatives, as well as in favor of limiting immigration and enacting law-and-order policies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_conservatism

The emergence of national conservatism

Over the past few years, national conservatives have erupted onto the political stage, making significant gains in popularity and sending shockwaves across the world. Nowhere has this been more pronounced than in Europe and the United States, especially since the outcome of the US presidential election.

The rise of national conservatism may embolden those that lean to the extreme right.

International aid saves 700 million lives

International aid financing and innovation has helped to save nearly 700 million lives in the past 25 years, but those gains could be lost if momentum and political will wane, global health experts said on Monday.

A report by international aid advocacy group the ONE Campaign said the progress against preventable deaths and diseases since 1990 could stall, and even go into reverse, unless donor governments make new commitments to innovation and action.

The report said international development assistance for health rose to a peak of $56 billion in 2013 from $20.4 billion in 2000. By 2015, it had fallen back a little to $51.8 billion.

During the five years from 2010 to 2015, maternal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa fell by 15 percent, under-five deaths dropped by nearly a third, and AIDS-related deaths fell by nearly 40 percent.

Salvini condemned for moving migrants from ‘model’ town

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini on Sunday (14 October) defended his decision to move hundreds of migrants out of a southern Italian town widely seen as a model of successful integration as opposition groups accused him of racism.

Riace, a small town in Calabria, Italy’s southern toe, has been in the spotlight since its mayor, Domenico Lucano, was arrested this month for allegedly favouring illegal immigration, sparking protests by residents and pro-migrant groups.

Salvini, leader of the right-wing League, celebrated the arrest, and this weekend announced that Riace’s mainly African migrants would be moved out and spread around the country.

Riace’s integration efforts have won prizes and drawn international acclaim for opening the town’s doors to thousands of refugees, integrating them into society and revitalising a dwindling local population.
