Refugee from Liberia is now running the the capital city of Montana. (He is also the first black person elected as a mayor in the state).

Wilmot Collins, now officially mayor of #HelenaMT, is addressing the crowd.

"We will never be tired ... Nobody will give up." Mass protests in Togo continue, calling for the resignation of President Gnassingbe

Tens of thousands protest in Togolese capital, the third this week

Responding to calls by the coalition of 14 political parties of the opposition, protesters march through the Togolese capital, chanting slogans hostile to the regime.

Jean-Pierre Fabre, leader of the opposition and Brigitte Adjamagbo-Johnson, coordinator of the coalition, walked in the middle of the procession, supervised by the police.

Since September, the opposition coalition has organized almost weekly demonstrations against the president, heir to a family in power for 50 years.

Faure Gnassingbé has been Togo’s leader since 2005, succeeding his father, General Gnassingbé Eyadéma, who led the country for 38 years.

A draft revision of the constitution is under way, but the limitation to two presidential terms is not retroactive, and would allow the president to represent himself in 2020 and then in 2025, which the opposition rejects.

So much was weird in 2017, but perhaps the weirdest was that people who nearly triggered a pizzeria gun massacre to stop imaginary child molesters rallied to support an actual child molester’s campaign for US Senate.

Heartbreaking to see which Americans describe themselves as "libertarian" (there is nothing liberal about them). They very rarely live up to such high ideals.

Colorado shooting suspect was an Iraq War vet who posted alt-right ‘Pepe’ memes on social media

Matthew Riehl, the man accused of killing a suburban Denver sheriff’s deputy and wounding four others, is a veteran of the Iraq War who is also fond of posting alt-right memes on his Facebook account.

Forbes writer J.J. MacNab discovered Riehl’s Facebook page, in which he identifies himself as “Matt Gonzo,” and where he has posted multiple memes featuring Pepe the Frog, the cartoon that has been appropriated as a symbol for white nationalists.

As the Associated Press has reported, Riehl seemed to have a grudge against local police officers, and posted multiple complaints about the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department on YouTube.

Specifically, the AP notes that Riehl in a December video called for “the firing of Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock” and attacked him “in highly personal terms.” Riehl also said that during that video that he would be running as a “libertarian” candidate for Douglas County Sheriff.

Israel-Palestine - Israeli lawmakers advance bill allowing death penalty for 'terrorists'

Israeli lawmakers advance bill on death penalty for 'terrorists'

Israel's parliament on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to a bill making it easier for "terrorists" to be sentenced to death after a push by right-wing politicians for the deeply controversial legislation.

The bill, approved 52-49, would ease the requirements military courts must meet to sentence those convicted of "terrorist" crimes to death. Israel has not carried out any executions since 1962.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voted in favour of the legislation, saying it was necessary in extreme cases. It requires three more votes in parliament to become law.

As the law stands now, a panel of three military judges must unanimously approve any death penalty in military courts.

You can blame/credit the astrology for the year. Saturn is moving into Capricorn on January 19, though casting a long shadow before, and all the fire and hope that was democracy goes back to first principles, power, control, and social cohesion. Apparently it's the culmination of a 200 year process, going back into Napoleon.. That is why the Wall is such a theme, and will remain one.

Fun fact: did you know the presidential election of 2016 was the same day (on the French revolutionary calendar) as Napoleon Bonaparte taking over?

You could not make this stuff up.

Those upon the kingship of the people
Those with their harvest measured in their mad time and their mad age
Will know their kingship will end in PAIN.
Their hands tied before them, they will be taken to the King,
To the First True Man.

Ethiopia says it will release all political prisoners and convert Maekalawi jail (described by @amnesty as a 'torture chamber') into a museum.

Ethiopia announces release of political prisoners in bid for national dialogue

Ethiopia’s prime minister shocked the country Wednesday by announcing the release of all political prisoners and the closure of a notorious detention center to promote political dialogue.

At a joint news conference with leaders of the four parties making up the ruling coalition, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said “politicians” under prosecution will be released and those convicted will be pardoned “as a matter of national reconciliation and the expansion of democratic freedoms,” according to statements on the prime minister’s Facebook site. It is the first time the existence of political prisoners has been acknowledged.

The Maekelawi detention center in downtown Addis Ababa will also be closed and turned into a museum, the report added. The closure of the prison and the release of the prisoners — many of them prominent opposition figures — have long been opposition demands.

Mitt Romney is the latest political target of Russian trolls and bots

As soon as Utah senator Orrin Hatch announced he would retire this year, speculation mounted (paywall) that Mitt Romney, a longtime critic of president Donald Trump, would vie for his place.

Alongside that speculation came a now familiar force in US politics: Russian bots and trolls. Tweets from Russian accounts with the hashtag #neverromney—echoing the “Never Trump” movement to which Romney was tied during 2016 presidential election—have reportedly exploded since Hatch’s statement.

Russia-linked #neverromney tweets are up 2,500% in the last 48 hours, according to Hamilton 68, a project run by the German Marshall Fund think tank that tracks tweets “tied to Russia-linked influence networks.” Tweets about Mitt Romney, who was the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, have soared by 14,400%.

Yes, the idea that "regime change" in dictatorships shouldn't be a priority is ridiculous. Authoritarianism is the root cause of war, terror, famine, nearly every evil we face.

"Regime change" doesn't mean sending in troops. It can mean everything from isolation and deterrence to encourage liberalization and empower opposition to simply having clear human rights standards reflected in policy.

And even though chaos may come when a dictatorship falls, postponing that moment only makes it worse. The longer a dictatorship is in power, the worse the eventual fall and aftermath. Civil society is razed. Opposition is crushed. The price keeps going up.

Critics slam Rotterdam police plan to confiscate expensive clothes

Legal experts and Rotterdam’s own ombudsman have slammed police plans to confiscate expensive clothing and shoes from youngsters they suspect of having criminal connections.

On Wednesday, the Telegraaf reported that police officers in Rotterdam are going to start seizing expensive jackets and luxury watches from potential youth criminals if it is not clear how they have been paid for.

Trials of the scheme will begin shortly under the supervision of the public prosecution department and department officials will decide what can be confiscated legally, the paper said.

However, city ombudsman Anne Mieke Zwaneveld has told the AD that the plan is the start of a slippery slope into ethic profiling. In addition, it will be legally difficult to confiscate people’s clothing, she said. ‘It is not illegal to walk around in it. In addition, it is often unclear how such items were paid for and how old they are,’ she said. Rotterdam lawyer Jaap Spigt told the paper that new policy is power play. ‘What is the next step if police start asking you how you got the clothes you are wearing,’ he told the AD. ‘Will they soon be going through your home asking how you paid for your television or sofa?’

Because liberals imposing conficatory taxes, socialized medicine, and limits on speech doesn't constitute authoritarianism.

Dont worry, the thread will have lots on leftist authoritarianism. Cheers

You should be grateful, that they are not in power in many places. chuckle

News flying below the radar: Trump has disbanded the #WhiteHouse commission that he’d created to investigate allegations of voting fraud. The probe had never uncovered a shred of evidence to substantiate Trump’s claims US elections are rigged.
