What happened was, in my liberal western bubble, I never imagined that the idea of educating girls would upset anyone outside of the Taliban or Boko Haram.

I can guarantee that I am more environmentally conscientious and active than you are.
A willy waving competition about how green we all are is a different thread altogether but go on, I will give you a chance to show off. My CO2 emissions from all household energy use, heating, cooling, washing, cooking and all other electricity use is 160kg. Most Americans average around 7,400kg for electricity, tell us how you do.

If you want to change Africa you educate the whole population, not just the little girls. Just sick.

Growing up in a country where both sexes get an equal access to education you have assumed the "educating African girls" means ".. but not boys". What you have to get your head around is that boys get whatever education is going and girls get little to none, remember Malala Yousafzai got shot in the head at point blank range for daring to suggest that girls should get an an education as well as boys.
I am carbon NEGATIVE! look into biochar. I don't believe the global warming co2 hoax either. Just need to be a proper steward of the earth.

Living in a world where child trafficking is so prevalent, educating the lil girls means something different that what you are intending. ( I hope)

Maybe this is part of it ,Sri Lanka 76% Buddhist , Pakistan 96% Moslem.Burqua,s do more than shield the face.
I've never been to Pakistan but have traveled.in many Moslem countries, Allways been impressed by their devoutness and sincerity ..
I do not think this has much to do with religion though.More to do with oppression of women .

Yeah there is something in that but you can't put it all down to Islam, there are similar attitudes, as you pointed out, in other traditional cultures that don't value the education of women.

Fear of the opposite sex and oppression go hand in hand.

It also helps if you have a religious text you can point to and say "see, even God says you should stay at home and have kids"

I hope not, rates have already started to fall in many sub Saharan countries with total lifetime fertility rates below 4 in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Gabon and Namibia. This is a projection by the UN,

To get there cultural attitudes, especially to women's education, have to change.

RE: Educating girls - the greatest action you can take against global warming
Wired had a good article on this issue:

"Solutions to climate change range from the effective and the practical to the potentially catastrophically dangerous—but, in this somewhat heated debate, a potent weapon in our arsenal is falling by the wayside: the empowerment of women."

"The link between the education of girls and a smaller carbon footprint isn’t as intuitively obvious as, say, phasing out fossil fuels. But dig a little deeper, and the evidence is overwhelming. It’s clear that getting more girls into school, and giving them a quality education, has a series of profound, cascading effects: reduced incidence of disease, higher life expectancies, more economic prosperity, fewer forced marriages, and fewer children. Better educational access and attainment not only equips women with the skills to deal with the antagonizing effects of climate change, but it gives them influence over how their communities militate against it."

"Although the education of girls in a small number of countries is at, or approaching, parity with boys, for most of the planet, this remains distressingly elusive. Poverty, along with community traditions, tends to hold back girls as boys are prioritized.

Then there's family planning, something that’s indivisible from the education of girls. The planet is overpopulated, and the demands of its citizens greatly exceed the natural resources provided by our environment."

Not true, those countries vary greatly in their culture and attitude to women. Progress will vary from country to country but I think now is the time to focus on improving girl's education where that is possible.

Here is another charity you may want to support. It's the Malala fund. Malala Yousafzai is a young Pakistani woman who was kicked out of school when the Taliban took over her area. As a girl she campaigned for girls to be able to go back to school. This made a target for the Taliban who boarded the bus she was travelling in and shot her through the head leaving her for dead, she was 14 years old.
