San Francisco Bans Facial Recognition Technology

San Francisco supervisors voted to pass a surveillance oversight legislation Tuesday that includes a ban on the use of facial recognition technology by police and other city departments.

The city has become the first in the U.S. to outlaw the tech at a time when it is becoming a part of daily life, from international airports to home security cameras.

Departments will need to get board approval to continue using or acquiring technology.

The vote was 8 to 1, with Supervisor Catherine Stefanie saying she could not vote for legislation that was well-intentioned but could compromise public safety.

The legislation bans municipal use but not personal, business or federal government use of face ID technology.

RE: San Francisco Bans Facial Recognition Technology
From security cameras to cell phones, our faces are now everywhere. That's why more law enforcement agencies are harnessing facial recognition technology to help fight crime. After someone suspected of committing a crime is caught on a surveillance camera, a screen grab of that person's face is then run through a database containing hundreds of thousands of mug shots of people with previous arrests.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office just outside Portland, Oregon has been using Amazon's recognition software for nearly two years. Senior systems analyst Chris Adzima said it's much more efficient than looking through thousands of booking photos with the human eye.

"The chin, eyes, everything is measured," Adzima said.

Officers said this is only one of many tools. But there's growing public fear of this technology.

The loudest backlash is coming from San Francisco. Lawmakers and civil liberty watchdogs are pushing for the nation's first-ever citywide ban of facial recognition at all government agencies.

"Facial recognition is biased against people of color and it's often inaccurate," said Matt Cagle, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union.

The problem here is that some departments may choose to use the technology in spite of the ban. All that's required is software and imagery... it wouldn't be hard to use the technology if some rogue departments heads decided that they wanted to. 5*

This is very strange, I think they also passed laws recently banning digital cash payment only for goods.

On one side they are doing excellent things, then on the other they are not. They are like schizophrenic.

Maybe the political rhetoric is making stuff seem schizophrenic.

Well if it came down to it, I would rather live in a place where they banned facial recognition software and electronic digital currency only even though they encouraged illegal immigration.

But if they wanted to restrict or eliminate my 2nd or 1st amendment rights, forget it. At that point I'll go live in the desert.

Probably just stores or in the case of the city they aren't allowing the use of facial scanning tech.

I guess stores could appeal to higher courts if they really wanted to install the devices. I know my grocery store now uses them for the automatic check out lines, so that would put a damper on large corporate chains that are doing the same thing.

My post was deleted?

Again I would rather have facial recognition than biometrics.

Facial recognition doesn't endanger anyone other than criminals - whoever they are. Which is why it's being banned.

The elite can't hide their faces any more than we can. Chips can be reprogrammed or even removed.
