Only a small cross section of the buying public purchased them. Cute cars no doubt but not for everyone.

I've owned a few.

Would like to get another one but they're really rare and pricey now.

$9400

New paint though claimed to be in original color, runs.

I paid $500 each for the other ones.

The most I've ever paid for a car was $2000. That was a 69 Porsche 912 missing the engine and transaxle. (Sold the wheels for $1000) The rest of the car got stolen from me.

chuckle

And I've owned over 60 of them.

If I sell my screenplay I might pay the "new" prices for a ghia, but couldn't stomach it unless I was rich.

My first car was a 1970 Karmann Ghia Convertible.

$500 in 1988. Tons of bondo in it, two kids had painted it in their back yard with a wagner power-painter.

It looked red in daylight, orange at night under sodium lights.

chuckle

Every system on the car was messed up, and I had a choice to either fix it myself or let it go, so I became a mechanic.

And that never paid well, but I get cars cheap.

Never had a car payment, never paid a mechanic bill.

Second ghia was a 1963 coupe with a 1965-67 "H" motor in it.

$500 again.

chuckle

That one was really fun because the transaxle was geared higher.

I never made a big profit off them, but hardly ever took a loss, got to drive them a long time "for free" basically.

But the prices shot way up in the last few decades.

We used to pay $20 for a running beetle at the salvage I worked at.

First part sold paid for the whole car.

It was crap anyway.

The good beetles stopped in 1979.

Better beetles stopped in 1966(67 was okay but they started with the cheap headlights...).

The new beetle is a water cooled front engine transverse POS.

lol

Exactly.

I did that recently.

chuckle

I was at a salvage looking for a part for a Kia, when I cam across a beetle that had "save this" painted on the windows with paint marker."

So I put it in neutral, turned the engine over by hand to check end play and compression.

Then I bought it.

chuckle

A few months ago, I yanked the motor out of it, changed the oil cooler seals, and rear main seal, and loaned it to a friend.

chuckle

I had only test driven it a block, but I knew it was good.

He's been driving it around three or four months now.

Decent heads are hard to find though.

He would have dropped a valve in his engine if he kept going with it.

We'll swap back after he gets heads.

If it had been water cooled, it would have taken a lot more work to make it reliable after sitting in a field twenty years.

lol

I like Corvairs, not sure about their dependability though.
