At 18 I felt I was ready to learn about the adult world and real life, but in no way did I feel ready to partake of it.

My mom always said she owned none of us a thing after we turned 18, and it seems really harsh to me. She was always there for us of course, but the thought of being thrown to the wolves at the tender age of 18 to sink or swim made me shudder.

Naughty Just stating the Obvious. taint

You panicked and exposed yourself

I'll repeat: WHY IS PEDOPHILIA ON YOUR MIND?

Because it SHOULD be on the mind of EVERY PARENT.

My mom taught me about this BEFORE I was allowed out into the world. If your mom or dad didn't warn you about this danger out in the world, then they did not do their job properly, which is to PREPARE you for WOLVES in sheep's clothing and to be as WISE as serpents.

"Of age" should be 21. The only reason it is 18 is because of the draft. Millitary needed (and still do) young bodies to fight. There is a pretty big difference in emotional maturity from 18 vs 21. Hell, it SHOULD be 25 now that all the youngsters are deciding never to move away from their parents.

RE: When is someone an adult?
BECAUSE we were taught to be wise as serpents at a young age, my sister was able to cleverly BAIT a pedophile who approached us walking along the street, thought quickly, invited him back to pick her up at the house because she needed to get her shoes. She set a "date" with him and when he arrived, the FBI were waiting for him inside the door.

That was QUITE dramatic!

They had been trying to get him for a LONG time.

I don't think a person becomes an adult until they move out on their own and become self supporting and self responsible.

I wouldn't believe the fake news. The media is highly controlled

This isn't f'ing FAKE NEWS this REALLY HAPPENED to my family when I was about... 7 years old!!!

I wasn't allowed to view the full confrontation on the porch but I tore away long enough to see his face, his red angry face yelling at the FBI agent... "If I had a gun right now I would kill you!!"

You have to be 16 to drive, 18 to smoke cigarettes/consent to sex, and 21 to drink alcohol. Why do we have this stupid tiered adult system? Make all that stuff legal at the same age. I don't care what age they make it but it doesn't make sense that you can join the military or take loans for college, and not be able to drink a beer if you want.

Anon

I think smoking is age 21 here (Texas) but they DO have exceptions for military in the laws.

RE: When is someone an adult?
I remember back when we jr. high school kids would gather at Walgreen's after school. One waitress there told a high school boy that "you aren't a man until you turn 30". I never forgot that, but as the years have gone by, I believe it. That, and that girls aren't women until they turn 25. By that time, you've had enough knocks to make better decisions. Growing up is tough.

Funny you say that... when I reached 25 I felt I was finally mature enough to marry. And I did. I didn't feel that I was mature enough to be a mother for another 7 years, so I waited. I'm glad I did.

RE: When is someone an adult?
Its really for different things.

Biologically you an adult after you get through puberty.

For sexual consent in our state you are an adult at 16.

For legal purposes like contracting you are an adult at 18 unless you have been emancipated in which case you are an adult at whatever age you are although I doubt if a court would emancipate anyone under 15.

RE: When is someone an adult?
I'll explain emancipation because it sounds like something to do with black slaves in the old south.

The problem is that under law a person under 18 can disavow any contract they made while under 18. So no one will sell them a car or rent an apartment until they turn 18. But what if say a 16 year old has a job and a wife, how is he supposed to rent an apartment or buy a car unless he gets an adult to do it for him. The answer is that if his parents are willing or I suppose even if they are not he files a court action to be emancipated and that allows him to enter into binding contracts when he is under 18.
