ABOUT 85% OF PEOPLE ONLY BREATHE OUT OF ONE NOSTRIL AT A TIME

Quote:Most interestingly of all, yet another study published in 1994, showed that when you are breathing through your left nostril, the right hemisphere of your brain will be more active or dominant and vice-verse when you are breathing through your right nostril.

Today I found out around 85% of humans only breathe out of one nostril at a time. Even more interesting is that the pattern of switching from breathing out of one nostril to the other happens in a cyclical fashion, with about four hours or so between each switch typically; although, this can vary from person to person and vary based on your body position or nasal congestion.

The first known instance of someone studying this “nasal cycle” was German nose specialist, Richard Kayser in 1895. How your nose accomplishes this switch is via erectile tissue in your nose, which is very similar to the erectile tissue in a penis or clitoris. Erectile tissue will swell up in one nostril, mostly blocking it, and at the same time erectile tissue in the other nostril will shrink, opening it up for breathing.

Even more interesting is that depending on which nostril you are predominately breathing out of at any given moment, it seems to greatly affect your body and brain.

For instance, a study in 1988 showed that breathing through your right nostril significantly increases blood glucose levels, while breathing through your left nostril has the opposite effect. It is speculated from this that abnormal nasal cycles, such as breathing through your right nostril for many years without a switch, may be one contributing factor in certain cases of diabetes.

Another study in 1993 showed that when you are breathing through your right nostril, you will use significantly more oxygen than when breathing through your left.

RE: ABOUT 85% OF PEOPLE ONLY BREATHE OUT OF ONE NOSTRIL AT A TIME
The nose filters the air we breathe, makes it moist, and brings it to body temperature.

The anatomy of both nostrils is the same, and no one would ever think that each nostril would serve different purposes. However we consider it perfectly normal that the different sides of our brains serve different purposes: we understand that the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa. We acknowledge that each person has a dominant eye, a dominant hand, and one ear that is more sensitive than the other. So, it is logical to expect a difference between our two nostrils.

Around 80% of people experience a nasal cycle in the congestion of their nostrils, varying from 2-7 hours in length. Also, if you lie down on your side, you will notice that the nostril closest to the surface you are lying on becomes blocked while the other one clears up. The nose deserves more credit and importance than we give it.

The Nasal Cycle
Block one of your nostrils with your finger and breathe through your nose. Now do the same with the other side.

Which nostril had a stronger air flow? That’s the nostril that is currently dominant in your nasal cycle.

When your right nostril is dominant, the left side of your brain is functioning better. Your thinking, reasoning, and learning will be better at these times. Your metabolism and digestion will also be working faster. Things you should do when your right nostril is dominant:

Reading
Studying and/or teaching
Giving speeches, talking in public
Signing important documents
Exercising
After you eat, it is a sign of good digestion that your right nostril becomes dominant.

I guess I'm one of those weirdos that uses both.

Actually if I have a cold and one gets clogged up it drives me crazy. I HAVE to clear it out so I can breathe normally. Icky icky.

heart RE: ABOUT 85% OF PEOPLE ONLY BREATHE OUT OF ONE NOSTRIL AT A TIME
The Ida and Pingala

On either side of the spine, are the ida and pingala.

Ida refers to the chandra (yin) energies of the moon.

Pingala refers to the surya (yang) energies of the sun.

When the breath is flowing out of the right (the solar) nostril, we are in a yang, energized state.

When the breath is flowing out of the left (the moon) nostril, we are in a yin, passive state.

Once every ninety minutes or so, our breath switches sides.

See if you can tell which nostril is more open right now.

Generally, if you close one nostril while you breathe, and then the other, you can tell which one is more open. When we are healthy, the breath switches nostrils regularly, every ninety minutes or so. When we are ill, the time between switching is longer, maybe every few hours. It has been said that when death is near, the breath does not switch nostrils at all; we will all get to test out that theory one day.
