Lightning Protection Techniques When Outdoors

Listening to Elizabeth K. Andre's Great Course on camping. She has a PhD in camping and is a professor at Northland college. I admit I had never heard of this before.

First get in a building or car if you can.

If there is a forest with trees at the same height get in there. But do not get under a large tree. Don't get under overpasses.

A key is to keep your feet together as 50% of deaths occur because of ground current where people have their feet apart. Squat down on an insulated pad if you have one with your feet together. You can sit on your butt with your feet together if prolonged squatting is too difficult.

People should spread out with at least 200 feet between them. This is so that if someone is struck the others can give CPR because if everyone is together and get hit there is no one to give CPR.

Its one mile for every five seconds between the flash and thunder and you should be in position three miles before and maintain until three miles or more after.

She said that once two group leaders thought they were clear and went to talk to each other but got struck and they were only able to bring one back through CPR. So waiting longer is better.

The idea is not to be a high point so a ditch or low point better but watch out for flash flooding.

Never knew you could get a PhD in camping or that it was so complicated.

I was taking a shower once when a storm turned severe. I hurried to rinse off because all I could think of is what would happen if I got zapped from the lighting hitting the house while in the shower.

I've always heard - don't be the highest point on the ground and don't stand under a large tree- because it might be hit by lightening.
the keeping your feet together is interesting

When your hair stands up like this duck for cover immediately. The conditions for a lightning strike nearby is very high.

I did not know you could have a PHD is camping or I would have one...

I have been by this college.

Not as big as maybe it should be because not many live in northern Wisconsin because of extreme cold in winter.

I do believe we are seeing the $1500 montania tent or a closely related 4 season tent.

A hot tent.

A expedition class tent.

Sadly the Apostle Islands are usually booked.

Maybe years in advance.

I have been to the interpretive presentations to the public at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Eco-League field course: Apostle Islands Natural and Cultural Interpretation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAgfCOKmYwQ

Eco League, a consortium of environmental liberal arts colleges, hosted a field course in August 2013, canoeing in Lake Superior's Apostle Islands and studying natural and cultural interpretation. The students from Northland College, College of the Atlantic, and Green Mountain College, along with professors from Northland and Prescott Colleges, spent two weeks in the islands meeting with interpretive rangers and museum docents, exploring, and preparing interpretive presentations. The "final exam" was to deliver their interpretive presentations to the public at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin.
