I've never been a huge shrimp fan but now I'm wondering if it's too late to stock up on Alaskan salmon before the effects of Fukeshima produce similar results. What's a good link nowadays for monitoring radiation levels?

radiationnetwork

Glad to see they finally got the HI & AK page up. Actually, I'm looking for data from farther out the Aleutian chain where the salmon runs occur earlier in the season.

Seafood markets report improving sales

Consumers who may have shied away from gulf seafood after the BP oil spill, are apparently buying it again.

Seafood markets that experienced a drop in sales, due largely to perceptions about the safety of gulf seafood, say their business is recovering nicely.

The owners of both Desporte's and Quality Seafood in Biloxi say sales are strong, on the verge of returning to pre-oil spill levels.

It could be simply the passage of time, a change of attitude among consumers or perhaps some persuasion from the "Gulf Safe" seafood campaign.

Seafood dealers say, "Whatever the reason, customers are back."

"Aren't these beautiful?" A worker at Desporte & Sons Seafood said, as she placed large, fresh shrimp into a plastic bag.

Shrimp and oysters are on the menu for Gary Koederitz and his wife Susan.

"Buying seafood for Good Friday," Koederitz said.

The Louisiana residents are stocking up on shrimp and oysters and crabs before heading to Destin, FL. And while they may have had concerns about eating gulf seafood right after the oil spill, those fears are gone.

"I don't anymore. I'm hoping that after a year, year and a half, the gulf is big enough that it's diluted anything that was dumped in there," said Koederitz.

"I love seafood. I'm a cajun from Louisiana and I've been eating seafood all my life," his wife Susan added.

One year ago, concerns about seafood in the wake of the BP oil spill contributed to a 30 percent plus drop in sales at Desporte's.

The "Gulf Safe" seafood campaign set out to erase those fears. And it seems to be working.....

Hmmm...editorial caveat?

Gulf Seafood Deformities Raise Questions Among Scientists And Fisherman

While the true extent of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was not known for about 4 years, as Al Jazeera notes in the video above, the repercussions of BP's 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico may become apparent more quickly...

...Despite sales dropping precipitously following the spill, the Gulf's seafood industry was given a boost after the government's Defense Commissary Agency began selling Gulf seafood products on 72 East Coast military bases in early 2011, reported AP.

Seventy percent of U.S. consumers who consumed seafood at least once during last 90 days say they're comfortable with eating seafood from Gulf of Mexico, up from 30% who said the same shortly after 2010 oil spill, study finds:

Seventy percent of consumers who consumed seafood at least once during the last 90 days said they were comfortable with eating seafood from the Gulf of Mexico, up from 30% who said the same shortly after the 2010 oil spill, according to a study conducted by Big Communications and New South Research, Supermarket News reported April 9.

The remaining 30% said they were either uncomfortable with eating seafood from the Gulf of Mexico or were consuming less food from that region, said Marketing Coordinator Joanne McNeely of Gulf Coast Coalition Seafood.

The Gulf Seafood Marketing Coalition presented the study, which used data compiled from telephone and online surveys as well as focus groups, at last February's International Boston Seafood Show.

McNeely said the study also found that 20% of respondents, who account for almost 46% of all seafood purchases, ate a minimum of 20 seafood meals within 90 days of the study.

Looks like I picked the right time to give up seafood. Can't even trust wild Alaskan salmon now with the radiation.

BP says the sea life was already sick before the spill.Jptdknpa

Name one scientific study that has shown that chemicals can cause fish to have lesions or shrimp to be born with no eyes? You can't.!

I had to say it before chemical Joe had the chance.

The corexit and oil did not just disappear. You do not even need to be a conspiracy buff to know that. It sucks, I loved me some shrimps!

I quit eating shrimp. God says it's bad anyhow..S977

Onc could do their own study.

Pour a bit of corexit and crude oil into a well established salt water tank, and see what happens.

Being a betting man from Vegas my money says the fishies will at very least die.

Once having had a salt water tank, it would be a bit expensive to do though.
