New Story + ICON : 3D Printed Homes for the Developing World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_conti...vM7jFZGAec

The first permitted, 3D-printed home created specifically for the developing world was unveiled today in Austin, Texas by New Story, the non-profit working to create a world where no human being lives in survival mode, and ICON, the newly launched construction technologies company leading the way into the future of homebuilding by using 3D printing to make major advancements in affordability, building performance, sustainability and customizability.

This $10,000 3D printed house can be built in 24 hours and is bigger than a studio apartment

One of the less obvious products being unveiled this week at SXSW is a small concrete house. On the outside, it doesn’t look like anything particularly special, although the covered patio and spacious windows are less common on tiny poured-concrete buildings.

That’s because the innovation isn’t in the structure or materials — it’s in the design and building. ICON, the company that builds the 650-square-foot house, claims it costs just $10,000 to build, and can be 3-D printed by a Vulcan printer in 12 to 24 hours using the most common building material on Earth.

RE: This $10,000 3D printed house can be built in 24 hours
Yah I think the technology will improve a lot in the next 10 years, but there is still a set up time required and they have to get the printers out to the site. The pads need to be graded and they also need foundations, along with sewer connections and utility connections (water and electricity).

Eventually I think most construction will be all automated along with the required utilities. So there still needs to be a design stage where things like drainage, utilities and grading are planned out, but the larger the development (subdivision) the more affordable each home becomes.

Alternatively they can print components out in a factory and then deliver the components to site. Even custom home building will probably go to this format in the next 10 years.

Are they claiming that 12x16 concrete shed pictured is a 650 Sq ft house or is the 650 sq ft home different?

It can be printed to be any size. That is likely just a model example proof of concept.

To a certain extent, the materials can only handle so much bending, shear and stress.

There are probably lots and lots of code violations in those homes, but then again a lot of the code was written to keep people employed.

So the church asked me to help tear down a shed...

I as a joke told them I would help if I could drive the bull dozer...

So they let me...

The shed was in great shape but was ugly...

I put this down to inspector bias against uglyness...

Which is probably why you always see these printed homes being targeted for developing nations that don't follow the IBC anyway.

And that will raise the costs in developed nations as building officials pick each design apart and impose all kinds of requirements.

My personal opinion is, if I have a piece of property and I want to print out an affordable home the building official can suck an egg.

It's not much smaller than my home.

I like the covered patio. I hope homes like this can be made to meet US building codes, at a similar price.

I'm pretty sure my dad has one of those behind his house already, but they call it a storage shed lol. That thing in Austin must be nice, and that company must feel great about themselves building it just to look at, adding a nice patio and some lighting, and then adding some security to keep the homeless from getting in there and messing it up. It's saying it all that they would rather put a group of them in El Salvador as opposed to offering it to a group of homeless war veterans.

I'm assuming it has a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and dining/living area inside. Plus a place to do laundry. If it has all that, with the large appliances (fridge, dishwasher, etc.) then the $10,000 is a good deal.

If it's empty inside and it's just a nice looking shed, I agree that would be terrible garbage.

Fantastic.

Goodbye cruel world I'm off to join the circus.

Fitting in isn't about what you know, it's what you don't know that makes you a team player.
