Cut pool noodles lengthwise and wrap them around the pipes. Then wrap with heat tape.

House in town.... Just rent

Car is outside, getting older.... $2,500?

Being able to somehow get the car in the basement so the pipes could burst on it because of the landlord's neglect and I could collect some insurance money.... Priceless.

It would make more sense to place the heat tape under the insulation ;)

"While a space heater, a hairdryer, or any heating mechanism can generally do the trick, if you don't have any of those things to help you out you can simply pour saltwater down the drain to thaw your frozen pipes. Well, maybe not that simple. First you have to boil about a gallon of water and start pouring in salt until it no longer dissolves. Once you're finished, toss your hot and salty water down the drain to help thaw out those pipes."

Earlier, I thought about dissolving rock salt in water and pouring it in my shower because there is standing water. I just did it. I used a big chunk of rock salt and made sure to separate out the rocks so I wouldn't clog the drain.

We shall wait and see....

Not too hot Skippy. PVC pipe can melt and distort. Also, joints can separate with water temperatures over 160°. PVC is rated for 160°. Do not pour boiling water down a drain! Allow to cool to approximately 150°.

I'm here to chew bubble gum. So you better give me some.

I agree. I didn't use boiling water, just hot water from the tap. Enough to melt the rock salt.

There is an ice dam under a main road in town here. The road has risen visibly. Quite a bump to drive over...

It's been a rough couple weeks here...

You can do that to get your car out of the ice - you don't need to boil the water it just needs to be warm and it helps if you dissolve salt into it. Just add sidewalk salt to the warm water and pour around the stuck car tires.

or...remove your drain cover and get rid of the hair clog hanging on it..
chuckle

A week of negative degree temps is the culprit. It happened the first year I moved here too but it was much worse. All my pipes were frozen then and a toilet burst in the apartment next to mine. We have a furnace down there now but about 8 feet from my shower drain to the main pipe froze. It's been crazy cold here every day.

wrap the pipes in insulation and there is an electric band heater that wraps around the pipes- you can get it at homedepot and lowes.
