"While a space heater, a hairdryer, or any heating mechanism can generally do the trick, if you don't have any of those things to help you out you can simply pour saltwater down the drain to thaw your frozen pipes. Well, maybe not that simple. First you have to boil about a gallon of water and start pouring in salt until it no longer dissolves. Once you're finished, toss your hot and salty water down the drain to help thaw out those pipes."

Earlier, I thought about dissolving rock salt in water and pouring it in my shower because there is standing water. I just did it. I used a big chunk of rock salt and made sure to separate out the rocks so I wouldn't clog the drain.

We shall wait and see....

salt water is highly corrosive, it will rust metals quite fast.

not copper

Glad to hear that it worked, and that with it still being very cold in NYS.. - 9F in my area right now.

Thanks. It takes a while but it works. I've got more salt in case it happens again.

RE: Try This Trick to Unfreeze a Drain Pipe
I just took a nice hot shower with no water pooled at my feet thanks to the salt water I put in yesterday.... It took almost 12 hours but the rock salt water cleared the drain pipe in below zero temps.

It works and it's safe.

Simple cheap technique taught to me by an old boy that had been using it for 30 or 40 years. When a freeze is expected turn on the hot water faucet until you get a small dribble and just leave it run. He told my other neighbor to run a hose from the drain on his water heater to his line to the septic tank just dribbling. Worked! He ended up trenching and burying his leach lines deeper so they were below the frost line. Keeping the water moving however little along with the warmth keeps them from freezing. My water bill only went up a dollar something! Sure a lot cheaper than electric pipe heaters!!

I do that with the cold water. If you use your hot water, your electric bill goes up. And plus my landlord pays for the water.

Your cold water dribbling, might freeze and clog the pipe faster.

Can u use tepid?

You can defrost your drain pipes faster with a stick welder.
