Very interesting, thanks for sharing this info. Have you tried it on cannabis? Or any other plants?

I have access to methyl hydrate and will be experimenting..

Oh sorry, went to sleep soon after. Haven't tried it yet, but I will as soon as I can.

No worries. I will be trying it within a day or two so will report back. Hopefully a few of us do..

Just a reminder, use PPE (especially goggles, face mask and gloves) when using methanol.

The most effective way to use it will undoubtedly vary, some plants will appreciate it more at different stages/conditions and application on different parts of the plants.

With some sort of superposition, it's lonely at the bottopom.

Straight methanol without ethanol, acetate, etc (or at least minimal amounts). Somewhere between 0 and 30% methanol to water from what I can tell. As usual, start with low amounts and test, some plants will appreciate as a foliar spray, some as typical soil/root soaks, some both and some won't benefit at all (though it is unlikely to do much damage if it does do damage to the plant). The main factor in it being effective or not depending on the plant's metabolism processes, as mentioned earlier, most plants could potentially benefit (C3 plants), while the more efficient (C4 plants) plants likely won't.

An additional benefit of using as a foliar spray is that it is likely very pesticidal/fungicidal too.

And remember, take precautions.

With some sort of superposition, it's lonely at the bottopom.

No, do NOT use it as a root soak unless you want your plants to die.

It is a foliar treatment only.

Interestingly, with it being a booster of sorts as well as potentially disruptive to pests and their eggs, it could be a really effective tool in the garden.

I'm amazed I haven't heard of this before, I've used all sorts of tricks for years to sorta tweak my plants..

I disagree...so does this patent.

Could one of the mods please change the thread title to be a bit more descriptive? Coz some who may be interested might not read this based on the title.

Something like "Promoting plant growth with methanol".

"Methanol applied to roots leads to phytotoxic damage in all three species tested."
2 of those being nightshades and the other Arabidopsis. The methods used to test that are also unrealistic and somewhat detached from practical use.

If you check the patent section 5 from that link I posted, it lists a whole bunch of plants that it supposedly applies to.

It could also be (is very likely) that the methanol is beneficial or damaging depending on other components (such as in combination with ammonium and/or typical soil components, carbon levels, etc) and conditions.

The methanol can also stimulate bacterial/fungal growth which may or may not be beneficial (depending on what it attracts).

I can't say it'd be generally useful as a typical soil drench, but to me there's enough potential for it to be beneficial, so I'll probably test that.

Your drinking buddy will reward your enabling behaviour with better growth. However, make sure it's methanol.

I wonder how ethanol (grain alcohol) would affect them. Just spray with vodka

Ethanol is for humans;) methanol is for plants;)

Ethanol has no effect on plants, apparently.

It will eat the leaves, not a good idea.

I was gonna say you could dip it formaldehyde and have an interesting time...

But that's so wrong and I'd never recommend that.

okay, I put an ounce of buds in a jar filled with methanol. How long do I wait to drink it?

methanol is poisonous.

It's used as a solvent, paint thinner, fuel additive, antifreeze and much more. Methyl hydrate is just another name for methanol.
