EU to map out membership for 6 western Balkan states

A European Commission paper to be published on Tuesday setting the target for what would be the bloc’s biggest single expansion in two decades may go down badly with some existing EU members wary of further enlargement.

Serbia and Montenegro, which have already begun EU accession talks, are viewed as the two most likely western Balkan aspirants to make the 2025 milestone, ahead of Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.

Britain was right/wrong to vote to leave the European Union:

Right: 40% (-5)
Wrong: 46% (+2)

via @YouGov, 28 - 29 Jan

Notable. Biggest lead for 'Wrong' since series began.

Here is the full regional breakdown of the economic impact assessments that MPs have now been able to see.

Important to note forecasts are for a fifteen year period - and predict how much more slowly the economy would grow, not how much it would shrink

Former Czech spy alleges Jeremy Corbyn took money for information

Sarkocy told Czech TV station ČT 24 that the Labour leader — who was then a backbench MP — knew he was collaborating with Czechoslovakia’s StB security service and that he was paid for the information he provided.

“[Corbyn] was recruited. He was getting money [for information],” the former StB agent said, adding that he did not pay any money himself to Corbyn. He also said Corbyn was not the only member of the British Labour party to be recruited.

Sarkocy said that he had passed Corbyn on to the former Czechoslovak secret service and that the recruitment had been carried out “under Russian supervision.”

I voted brexit. I knew exactly what it meant. if there's a second vote, I will know we live under only an approximation of democracy.

Theresa backs you up - backs up the people's vote for Brexit.

We’re seeing dangerous political polarisation which - if the silent majority doesn’t act - will sink our great country & Party. Very worrying for true @Conservatives. I don’t want our Party to be hijacked by people on the extreme as @Labour has been.

RE: Calmdown to Brexit
NI may be considered part of EU customs territory post-Brexit

The territory of Northern Ireland may be considered part of European Union customs territory post-Brexit, according to a draft legal text to be adopted by the European Commission tomorrow, RTÉ News understands.

The carefully worded text will allude to a single regulatory space on the island of Ireland with no internal barriers.

This scenario would reflect the so-called "default" or "backstop" option contained in the December agreement between the EU and the UK on how to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

According to a well-placed EU source, the draft text will allude to a single regulatory space with no internal frontiers, in order to give effect to the regulatory alignment backstop.

The draft text will also state that, under the backstop option, joint EU-UK customs teams will be required to apply checks on goods coming from the UK into the new regulatory space, but will not specify where those checks will take place.
