NYC to terminate Trump contracts after Capitol insurrection

Source: Associated Press

New York City will terminate business contracts with President Donald Trump after last week’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday.

“I’m here to announce that the city of New York is severing all contracts with the Trump Organization,” de Blasio said in an interview on MSNBC.

De Blasio said the Trump Organization earns about $17 million a year in profits from its contracts to run two ice skating rinks and a carousel in Central Park as well as a golf course in the Bronx.

The city can legally terminate a contract if the leadership of a company is engaged in criminal activity, the Democratic mayor said. “Inciting an insurrection — let’s be very clear, let’s say the words again — inciting an insurrection against the United States government clearly constitutes criminal activity,” he said.

...
De Blasio had said earlier that the city was examining its legal options to end the Trump contracts. He said Wednesday that city lawyers determined that if Trump sues over the move, the city will win. Trump “incited a mob to attack the Capitol,” de Blasio said, adding, “The lawyers looked at it and it was just as clear as a bell that’s grounds for severing these contracts and we’re moving to do that right away.”

RE: BIG 100 Day Countdown to Trump's complete political defeat - BLUE WAVE UPDATES:
Trump impeached for a second time. Historic in that regard, also the most bipartisan impeachment in history!!!!! Cheer

‘Reject sedition’: House impeaches Trump in historic second rebuke
The action now moves to the Senate, where a trial isn't expected to begin until the president is out of office.

"The House impeached President Donald Trump Wednesday for the second time — a historic, bipartisan condemnation of an outgoing president whose words fueled a deadly insurrection at the Capitol last week.

Ten Republicans joined all Democrats in a 232-197 vote supporting a single impeachment count, "incitement of insurrection,” the gravest charge ever lodged against a sitting president. The process now moves to the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated that a trial won’t begin until Trump is out of office.

"We know that the president of the United States incited this insurrection, this armed rebellion, against our common country," Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on the floor. “He must go – he is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love."

The House moved swiftly to impeach Trump exactly one week after he delivered a speech to supporters in front of the White House, vowing never to concede and urging them to march to the Capitol and stop lawmakers from certifying the “rigged election.”

A mob of violent insurrectionists then marched up the National Mall, invading the U.S. Capitol in an hours-long siege, battering police officers and sending lawmakers and staff fleeing for their lives. Five people were killed, including a U.S. Capitol police officer who died of injuries sustained during the riots.

“We must rise to this moment,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said in the final speech of the day. “Reject sedition, tyranny and insurrection.”

The result of the vote was the most bipartisan impeachment in history, as well as the most-ever votes for any single article of impeachment.

The ten Republicans who supported impeachment were led by No. 3 GOP leader Liz Cheney of Wyoming. In addition, Reps. John Katko (R-N.Y.), David Valadao (R-Calif.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Tom Rice (R-S.C.), Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.), Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio) and Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) also voted in favor.

Several had been surprising, particularly Rice, who had given no indication that he was considering voting to remove Trump. No Democrats broke ranks.

In some ways, the mood inside the Capitol on Wednesday was tense as lawmakers traversed hallways that were so packed with National Guard officers — quartered in the building for one of the few times since the Civil War — that some privately described it as an army barracks. But it was also eerily hushed. There were none of the swarms of reporters and cameras that had packed the building just 13 months ago during Trump's first impeachment.

Dozens of members were absent from proceedings, forced to remain home because they were infected or exposed to the coronavirus. At least three Democrats tested positive after sheltering in a massive safe room for lawmakers last Wednesday, where multiple Republicans refused to wear masks, and many more are now quarantining."

Thanks! I think it is a good record of the LOP's left, right and center views during the election and the failure of Trump and so many to deal mentally with Trump's defeat and eventual fall from power.

Cheers

The two will perform at the Jan. 20 event for the incoming 46th U.S. president, which will also feature remarks from a Black firefighter from Georgia, a former Youth Poet Laureate, a Catholic priest, and a pastor from Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

RE: BIG 100 Day Countdown to Trump's complete political defeat - BLUE WAVE UPDATES:
Well this is super late but better than never. I guess. Scream1

Mike Pence calls Kamala Harris to offer congratulations

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence has called his soon-to-be successor Kamala Harris to offer his congratulations, according to two people familiar with the conversation.

It’s the first known contact between the elected members of the outgoing and incoming administrations. President Donald Trump has not reached out to President-elect Joe Biden and has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of Biden’s win.

But Pence has become an unexpected defender of Biden’s. The vice president resisted pressure from Trump to object to the Democrat’s election win while presiding over Congress’ certification of the Electoral Vote count last week.

Pence will also attend Biden’s Jan. 20 inauguration, which Trump is refusing to attend.

One of the people familiar with the Thursday afternoon conversation described it as a “good call,” with Pence congratulating his successor and offering assistance. They spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the private conversation.

The call came less than a week before Biden and Harris take office, and just over a week after the storming of the Capitol by Trump’s supporters.

While Trump has remained largely behind closed doors fuming since his loss, Pence has been stepping up and fulfilling many of the ceremonial duties of the presidency, including greeting greeting members of the National Guard now protecting the Capitol building Thursday evening.

The call to his successor is a continuation of the traditional show of comity between outgoing and incoming leaders that Trump, in contrast, has flouted. In 2008, then-Vice President Dick Cheney called Biden to wish him congratulations the night of his win, and invited Biden and his wife Jill to tour the vice-presidential residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory shortly before the 2009 inauguration."

Trump spends final moments in the White House raging at Republican leaders on Capitol Hill: report

"With no one else to blame for his own election defeat, President Trump has zeroed in on one of his earliest Congressional backers, House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-CA.

According to the New York Times' Maggie Haberman, Trump is spending his final moments in the White House fuming because he is still convinced that he won the election. In keeping with his aversion to personal responsibility, Trump has now put a target on his once stalwart ally, who has, as of late, not shown the unconditional support he demands.

McCarthy –– who supported the President's crusade to overturn the election and voted against the electoral certification of President-elect Joe Biden –– surprised his colleagues on the House floor last week when he cast slight aspersion on Trump following the riot on Capitol Hill. "The president bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob rioters," McCarthy said, treading a fine line, "He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding."

After condemning the riot despite propagating the very lies which incited it, McCarthy stopped short of calling for Trump's impeachment, instead suggesting that censure or a bi-partisan investigation would be better suited for the circumstances. Although McCarthy said just about the bare minimum to oppose Trump, the President is reportedly furious with him for not staying true to the Big Lie. The President's sudden disownment of one of his most loyal boosters comes just after Trump's bizarre disavowal of Vice President Mike Pence, whom Trump asked to do the impossible by invalidating the Electoral College votes.

After supporting Trump's baseless election fraud crusade, but condemning the Capitol riot while defending Trump against a second impeachment, McCarthy has now alienated himself on Capitol Hill, with Democrats and Republicans alike demanding that he step down.

The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump Republican political action committee, denounced McCarthy as a "pathetic enabler," telling the Senator, "pack up [his] desk." A blistering op-ed in the Sacramento Bee, a paper-based in McCarthy's home state of California called him a "soulless anti-democracy conspirator." Even McCarthy's very own mentor retired California Congressman Bill Thomas tarred his former protégé as a "hypocrite" for supporting the "the phony lies the President perpetuated."

McCarthy has also faced significant backlash from his own hometown constituency in Bakersfield, California, where Republicans feel he did not go far enough to defend the commander-in-chief. Speaking for many conservatives in Bakersfield, activist Kenneth L. Mettler told the Times, "I'll just boil it down: He's a RINO traitor [...] President Trump did nothing wrong. President Trump communicated his case. He did not incite anybody. I do honestly think there were agitators, infiltrators."

Like many Republican members of Congress who supported Trump, McCarthy faces the choice between doubling down to maintain Trump's voting block and cutting his losses to curry favor with a new administration. As Trump's term comes to an end, it is becoming abundantly clear that many will not be permitted to walk the line.

"The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., speaking on the Senate floor Tuesday of the Jan. 6 incident. McConnell's statement as Trump leaves office signals support for the impeachment of a former president."

Joe Biden Sworn In As 46th President Of The United States
He called for national unity as Donald Trump’s rocky presidency came to an end.

"Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president on Wednesday, bringing to an end one of the most unorthodox, turbulent presidencies in U.S. history.

“Today, we celebrate triumph not of a candidate but of a cause: the cause of democracy,” Biden said moments after taking the oath of office. “The people, the will of the people has been heard.”

“We have learned again that democracy is precious, democracy is fragile,” he added. “And at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed.”

In his roughly 25-minute speech, Biden called for national unity and pledged to tackle “with purpose and resolve” the monumental issues plaguing the country, including the COVID-19 pandemic, systemic racism and climate change.

“We can treat each other with dignity and respect,” Biden said. “We can join forces, stop the shouting and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury. No progress, only exhausting outrage.”"

RE: BIG 100 Day Countdown to Trump's complete political defeat - BLUE WAVE UPDATES:
And it's done!

Georgia Democrats Ossoff And Warnock Sworn In, Senate Officially Flips Blue
Vice President Kamala Harris also swore in her Senate replacement.

"Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock have been sworn into the United States Senate after winning their respective runoff elections in Georgia on Jan. 5, officially handing control of the chamber — and the 117th Congress — to the Democrats.

Kamala Harris performed the ceremony hours after her own historic swearing-in as vice president earlier on Wednesday.

She also swore in Alex Padilla, who now holds her former California Senate seat as the state’s first Latino senator.

In her new role, Harris will likely be called upon to cast tie-breaking votes in Senate, which is split 50-50 between the Democratic and Republican caucuses. "

RE: BIG 100 Day Countdown to Trump's complete political defeat - BLUE WAVE UPDATES:
Jhikpghf Cheer Trump is going to lie about this just like he lied about his tiny 2017 inauguration. But nobody will know about it because Trump can't tweet anymore. chuckle

Over 1 million more people watched Biden's inauguration than Trump's

"President Joe Biden's inauguration secured over 1 million more viewers than former President Donald Trump's did, according to early numbers from Nielsen.

Biden's ceremony drew 39.87 million people across the major networks and cable channels, about a 4% increase from what Trump got in 2017, according to Nielsen.

Trump, notoriously obsessed with ratings, was unable to tweet about the news on Thursday following his permanent suspension from the social network.

Here's how the inauguration ratings sorted out among the biggest channels:

CNN cleaned up with 9.9 million viewers on average, more than any other outlet

ABC averaged 7.66 million

NBC News averaged 6.89 million

MSNBC 's average rounded up to 6.53 million

CBS News came in at 6.07 million viewers on average

Fox News came in last with just 2.74 million

Both MSNBC and CNN got significant boosts compared to 2017, according to The New York Times. Their ratings quadrupled and tripled, respectively, according to Times media reporter Michael Grynbaum.
