Protesters held on $1 million bail after demonstration over Pennsylvania police shooting

At least seven protesters who were arrested during demonstrations over a fatal police shooting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, were held on $1 million bail set by a judge on Tuesday.

Lancaster City Bureau of Police arrested 12 adults and one juvenile overnight on Sunday when a crowd of more than 100 gathered outside the police station in protest of a shooting that day of Ricardo Munoz, who prosecutors say had run at an officer with a knife.

Police used pepper spray and chemical agents against demonstrators that night.

“Suspects piled street signs, trash cans, a metal dumpster, a metal bike rack, pieces of plywood and a wooden pallet at the intersection of N. Prince St. and W. Chestnut St,” police said in a press release. “The suspects filled the dumpster with additional trash bags, as well as the wood, and set the contents on fire.”

Chip Patterson, whose 20-year-old daughter Kathyrn was among those arrested, said his daughter was acting as a medic and was not guilty of the charges against her.

“I cannot tell you how long this night has been,” Patterson told The Associated Press on Tuesday. “I think regardless of what these people did or didn’t do, the bail amount is just outrageous and clearly against the Eighth Amendment.”

The Eighth Amendment protects against excessive bail and the use of “cruel and unusual punishments."

Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman on Twitter denounced the bail as "blatantly unconstitutional."

I guess the Harris/Biden campaign better start raising more money to get these useful idiots out of jail and back to committing more crimes.

Bail should not be used as a form of pretrial retribution, it's just another for-profit government con job used to instill fear and display power.

I don't think it will stand.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighth_Ame...ssive_bail

The article makes brief mention of bail then moves on to the rest of the story.
Why didn't they mention the Judge's reasoning, or even attempt to contact the judge.

There's clearly more to the story. But I don't really have the interest to dig deeper.

There is the fact third parties have been bailing out these crooks.
If bail was set at a level meant to keep the person behind bars and they ignored the very deep pockets who have been posting bail for them they would be back on the street before end of day.

RE: Protesters held on $1 million bail after demonstration over police shooting
The protesters are each charged with felony arson, riot and vandalism charges, among other protest-related charges. At least six of the eight people arrested Monday morning had bail set at $1 million by Magisterial District Judge Bruce Roth on Monday night, according to court documents. One of the protesters was not eligible for bail, and another person’s docket had not yet been updated.

RE: Protesters held on $1 million bail after demonstration over police shooting
City police did not request the bail amount, said Lt. Bill Hickey, the public information officer for the bureau. The District Attorney’s office did not provide any input regarding bail, spokesperson Brett Hambright said in an email.

The protesters are charged with several felony offenses, which are considered in the judge’s equation when deciding bail, as well as the input of police.

“The crimes that these defendants are facing include serious felony offenses,” Hickey said in an email. “This is not a new or unheard of practice and falls within the rules of criminal procedure.” …

animals only understand one thing: violent force
if only we could hold all the rioters responsible for all the fiscal damage incurred
someone needs to make an example of them so other idiots sit down and shut up before they think twice about getting uppity about absolutely nothing
they destroy out civil liberties so when we actually do need to protest its less effective. f*#k these morons

From what IM reading these guys were the instigators for the violence. They must have had some intel to grab them all.
Question is can it stick? If so other city will do the same. This could be a tipping point.

That's what all rioters bail should be. Finally a judge who follows the law, instead of subverting it, for political purposes. And no, they weren't peaceful protesters.

They always seem so shocked and amazed to find that there are consequences for their actions.

Also the charges they are facing are pretty serious and the court knows that if they are released that there is a very low chance they will actually attend court, so the bail has to be set high enough that the BLM instigators think twice about fronting up the money to bail them out.
