RE: “the collapse of journalism and democracy.”
Facebook never was a journalist organization, but an application for networking, before it became a fad for the common riff raff and youtube and google are also not journalistic organizations.

If people really had a problem with it and weren't so lazy, then at least some of them would create competing companies and services.

If all the people that had their channels demonetized or closed by youtube would have started a competing service, they might already be growing while you tube shrinks.

That takes hard work though, easier to say the government should step in and that is how they take your rights.

Problem, reaction, solution.

I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain that further to the foolish.

Having a grain of wisdom, I should walk in the Great Way,
And my only fear would be to stray from it.

The result will be the breaking up of Facebook and Twitter into small entities and strong oversight. We can't have leftist radicals censoring the news.

It should go back to the way it was, before facebook and twitter consolidated chat. Before, their take over almost every major site had it's own built in chat function and it was better back then, because the people chatting on the various pages usually already had something in common. But, I don't think those days will ever return.

You can create competing services but nobody will come. The barriers to entry are too high.

Saying that folks who don't like Google's and Twitter's platforms can form competing services is like saying that tey should dig a hole in the ground that they can shout into.

Nobody will hear.

Let's just dismantle the big bohemoths like Google, Facebook, Twitter and let things start over instead.

to be fair they are as big as the East India Companies and more powerful than most governments... people think the British built the British Empire when in reality it was built by the East India Company... remove those and you remove the Empire, remove the US tech giants and you remove the US empire..

I think you are right, hence the merger of government and business called fascism. Hence the merger of the big tech firms and government intel to manufacture consent for the US empire.

First of all anything can go viral on the internet and the more people angry at the big behemoths the easier it would be for a competing platform to succeed.

As far as dismantling the big guys that is not how anti trust works. They would just split them into regional companies, like they did with the phone companies.

And breaking it into multiple regional ones, won't really free up the censorship and in the end would probably cause problems with intercommunication as each regional company maintains and updates different software systems.

After all myspace came before facebook and there is not really any barrier for the masses to suddenly switch again to a competitor.

It's different this time. Google services come pre-installed on most phones. They're basically intractable. Facebook could decline in popularity, but I don't see it happening, either. The problem is that the vast majority of people are happy with them. They don't mind surrendering their privacy, and they can post memes about how Facebook is biased on Facebook.

Even so, we have to try. Like I said, just tell your friends about alternatives.

that is the definition of dismantling

agreed. Today 42% of Americans get their news from Facebook. So today facebook is the high value censor.

If another platform gained that status they would be forced to adopt censorship policies just like facebook has been forced to and google and apple, all of which do substantial business with the government and enjoy special protections from anti trust as a result.
