It's distemper JJ - not contagious to humans but it IS contagious to pet dogs.

Distemper is contagious to humans and it can eventually cripple you

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17002577
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-cond...c-20350811
>The disease might affect only one or two areas of your body or might be widespread. Your signs and symptoms, if any, will depend on the affected part of your body.

Pelvis. Paget's disease of bone in the pelvis can cause hip pain.
Skull. An overgrowth of bone in the skull can cause hearing loss or headaches.
Spine. If your spine is affected, nerve roots can become compressed. This can cause pain, tingling and numbness in an arm or leg.
Leg. As the bones weaken, they may bend — causing you to become bowlegged. Enlarged and misshapen bones in your legs can put extra stress on nearby joints, which may cause osteoarthritis in your knee or hip.

We became what we are due to a dog disease (sarcoptic mange, loss of hair, burrowing etc.)

It's distemper JJ - not contagious to humans ....

...Yet.

Canine Flu is a good example of how viruses can jump species.

"Canine influenza (dog flu) is influenza occurring in canine animals. Canine influenza is caused by varieties of influenzavirus A, such as equine influenza virus H3N8, which in 2004 was discovered to cause disease in dogs. Because of the lack of previous exposure to this virus, dogs have no natural immunity to it. Therefore.... (go to link for more)"

See - a brand new strain of an old virus which was Equine Flu (Horse Flu) which jumped into grey hound dogs that were stabled next to racing horses.

The Same can be said of Distemper. Eventually it too will learn the trick of jumping to other species like humans.

Granted, due to its mode of communication from individuals, through the fluids or feces of an infected individual, humans may be less prone to get distemper... But eventually, with the rise in human numbers, with humans living in areas they should not (like the depths of the Amazonian Jungle) the numbers will come to favor distemper jumping to humans and even possibly becoming airborne, or more virulent.

Viruses are sneaky, tricky and mutate to readily.

Never say that a virus won't jump to humans. Just because it hasn't yet doesn't mean it won't.

RE: There be zombies!
329 B.C., Afghanistan
An unnamed Macedonian column built by the legendary conqueror Alexander the Great was visited many times by Soviet Special Forces during their own war of occupation. Five miles from the monument, one unit discovered the ancient remains of what is believed to be Hellenic Army barracks. Among other artifacts, there was a small bronze vase.

Its inlaid pictures show:

(1) one man biting another;
(2) the victim lying on his deathbed,
(3) the victim rising up again; and back to
(1) biting another man.
The circular nature of this vase, as well as the pictures themselves, could be evidence of an undead outbreak either witnessed by Alexander or related to him by one of the local tribes.

I realize this is the answer more than likely. Most overlook.
