Congrats GG, very nice

But if that -23 hit in Dec with short days, it might not have been successful

i had the idea that fresh compost is hot, too hot for plants to survive....so we dug trenches and filled them with hot spent mushroom compost and covered it with 6 " of soil....then we planted in the soil.... the plants have been covered with frost cloth and then greenhouse plastic .... they have been watered 3 times all winter, never been weeded and have no pests to speak of.... the black pots that the mustard greens are in are filled with the hot compost and 6 " soil on top.

very slow growing, and if i had started sooner, i would have had greater success, i certain plants did not survive as well as others, .... but many did !!
next year will be amazing !

That is a really really really good idea
You can publish that in Mother Earth news

I think I would bury a thick wall of styrofoam insulation, doen to the frost line, around the greenhouse.
That is, the soil in the greenhouse, would go all the way down to the 45/whatever degree geothermal ground temperature, and conduct it up yo the greenhouse soil. But, it would be insulated from the subfreezing soil, above the frostline, that surrounds the greenhouse.
And I agree, a compodt pile, within yhe greenhouse is a good idea.

I have no experience. But I have thought about growing some exotic plants rhat require a longer growing season, with electric grow lights. For instance, a grocery store I went to sells vanilla beans, for a buck, a piece. I imagin there might be some profit potential there.
I would like to grow my own, vanilla, coffee, avocado, spices, herbs, ginseng 'hemp', and all the other 'unmentionable' plants that are creating a trade deficit in America.. Naughty
There is a blue Jamaican banana variety, that is supposed to tolerate cool climates better, and taste more like vanilla icecream.(than yellow bananas)

Hey GG, I was going to say that many people have what we call Hoop Houses - like a green house made of plastic. They keep it warm in the cold weather by using compost. The compost generates enough heat to keep the hoop house warm.

Just to be able to go outside and sit in that thing when it's -20 and be comfortable to me would be a zen experience especially if your acreage is in a greenhouse in the country.

Look into a Walapini greenhouse and the simple ways to store the summer heat underground;)
