Airliner Encountered Unidentified Fast-Moving Cylindrical Object Over New Mexico

American Airlines Flight 2292, an Airbus A320 flying between Cincinnati and Phoenix on February 21st, 2021, had a bizarre close encounter with what its crew described as a "long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile" moving extremely fast over the top of their aircraft as it cruised along at 36,000 feet and 400 knots. The incident occurred over the remote northeast corner of New Mexico, to the west of the tiny town of Des Moines.

Steve Douglass, an experienced radio interceptor and the proprietor of Deep Black Horizon, told The War Zone that he was recording from his arsenal of scanners when he heard the strange transmission. The War Zone has reviewed over an hour of audio that Douglass has provided to us from before and after the strange radio call. We are working to authenticate it from the FAA and get further information and comment from the agency on the event. We have also reached out to American Airlines for any additional details they can provide.

From Steve's blog on the encounter:

At approximately 1:19 CST on the Albuquerque Center frequency of 127.850 MHz or 134.750 MHz (recording wasn't frequency stamped) the pilot reported: "Do you have any targets up here? We just had something go right over the top of us - I hate to say this but it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile type of thing - moving really fast right over the top of us."

According to Flight 24 and Flight Aware AAL 2292 was over the northeast corner of New Mexico west of Clayton, New Mexico. No reply was monitored by Albuquerque Center because local (Amarillo) air traffic walked on top of it. AAL 2292 was near flight level 370 (37k) at the time of the report.

No significant military aircraft presence was noted on ADS-B logs.

The aircraft flew on to land in Phoenix, AZ.

I do not label myself. What I stand for is based on my own convictions, and I don't care which box - the left one or the right one - they happen to belong.

Took a drive to New Mexico. Been wanting to video the Horseshoe Crater for awhile. Just so happens its right near the Capulin Volcano and Folsom Falls. Not a good day for flying. The wind was pretty bad but I drove all that way so I wasn't gonna leave with nothing.

This is a video showing what the drive up to the crater looks like as well as some of the views from the top walking path etc.

RE: Airliner Encountered Unidentified Fast-Moving Cylindrical Object Over New Mexico
I never knew these volcanos were there.

I have been over the border in Colorado.

There is a highway that roughly travels the route of the Santa Fe Trail
The highway is straight and the old trail was not so you can see is wandering sometimes on one side and sometimes the other but always fairly close.

There comes a point where the first route turned off.
There is a gravel parking lot
and a brook that barely had water.
Then it went to a ranch and over a pass no one uses anymore.

They did not know about the Raton Pass.

Santa Fe Trail final route
Through Raton Pass
...

The several routes.
The reason these trails no longer exist is they were never surveyed and plotted as public roads.
However sometimes they were but not very often.

Oh and people dumped garbage, left fire pits.
That's how you knew you were still on the trail.

Sometimes a cylinder is just a cylinder.

How about getting it from the flight deck crew? The Captain and First Officer?

They'll know better than anyone listening to coms from the ground.

I track RAF fighter jets all the time.
