Quote:According to the Times, information from intelligence services in Britain and the Netherlands also contributed to the decision to set up the FBI probe into Russian attempts to influence the election.

FBI agents reportedly interviewed Alexander Downer as part of their investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the US presidential election.

Within hours of the FBI opening its probe, then known by its codename Crossfire Hurricane, it secretly sent two agents to London to question Australia's then-high commissioner to the UK, with only a handful of officials aware of the mission, according to the New York Times.

The Times says top Australian officials broke diplomatic protocol to allow the agents to question Mr Downer.

The results, summarised and sent to Washington on August 2 last year, reportedly laid the foundations for what is now special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

The breakthrough stemmed from a night of heavy drinking Mr Downer had with former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos at the Kensington Wine Rooms in London in May 2016.

According to a previous Times article, it was Mr Downer who held his booze better, extracting an admission from Mr Papadopoulos that Russia was shopping dirt on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to her political rivals.

When leaked Democratic Party emails began appearing in public two months later it is alleged Australian officials passed on the Downer intelligence to their American counterparts, helping to trigger the FBI probe into Russian interference in the US election.

Court documents unsealed late last year showed that in April 2016 Mr Papadopoulos met with Joseph Mifsud, a professor in London who he believed to have substantial connections in the Russian Government and who claimed to have "thousands of emails" that would hurt Mrs Clinton.

Quote:When the news of his confession broke, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr Papadopoulos' role was "extremely limited" and "no activity was ever done in an official capacity on behalf of the campaign".

Mr Trump, who in March 2016 described his then-campaign aide as an "excellent guy", in November labelled him a "low-level volunteer" and "a liar".

Russia tried to help elect Trump, Senate intel committee says

Quote:"Committee staff have spent 14 months reviewing the sources, tradecraft, and analytic work, and we see no reason to dispute the conclusions," Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, a Republican, said in a statement.

The Senate committee's findings clash with a report last month from Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee that found "no evidence" of Trump campaign collusion. That report maintained that Russia's aim wasn't to boost Trump's chances of winning, but rather to undermine free elections and spread discord in the US.

Wednesday's statement on the Senate committee's conclusions also included remarks from Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia who serves as the committee's vice chair. Warner echoed Burr.

"After a thorough review, our staff concluded that the ICA [Intelligence Community Assessment] conclusions were accurate and on point," Warner said. "The Russian effort was extensive, sophisticated, and ordered by President Putin himself for the purpose of helping Donald Trump and hurting Hillary Clinton."

[ ]Daily Caller[/size]

Quote:Two months before the 2016 election, George Papadopoulos received a strange request for a meeting in London, one of several the young Trump adviser would be offered — and he would accept — during the presidential campaign.

The meeting request, which has not been reported until now, came from Stefan Halper, a foreign policy expert and Cambridge professor with connections to the CIA and its British counterpart, MI6.

Halper’s September 2016 outreach to Papadopoulos wasn’t his only contact with Trump campaign members. The 73-year-old professor, a veteran of three Republican administrations, met with two other campaign advisers, The Daily Caller News Foundation learned.

RE: Australia, Britain and the Netherlands and ''Crossfire Hurricane"
Quote: Alexander Downer has distanced himself from a bizarre Twitter tirade launched against him by Donald Trump's former foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, saying "I'll leave others to make judgments about the veracity of those tweets".

Papadopoulos, who was last week sentenced to 14 days in jail for lying to the FBI, sent out a series of tweets suggesting Downer was part of an elaborate conspiracy involving British spy agency MI6 and "private intelligence organisations" to damage the Trump campaign.

He even included a reference that the former Australian foreign minister had once worn women's stockings.

https://www.smh.com.au/world/north-ameri...5030r.html

Quote:During an interview with The New York Times this week, Papadopoulos, 31, for the first time gave his own account of why he deceived FBI agents after they arrived at his house in Chicago that January asking about any connections between the Trump campaign and Russian intermediaries.

"I wanted to distance myself as much as possible — and Trump himself and the campaign — from what was probably an illegal action or dangerous information," he said. At the time of the FBI interview, he said, he was being considered for a job in the Trump administration and was concerned about where the escalating investigation might lead. He made no suggestion that anyone else on the Trump campaign or in the administration had directed him to lie.

Papdopoulos and Downer both said their 2016 meeting was not a boozy affair, as some media reports have suggested.

"No one was drunk, as some articles stated that we might have been," Papadopoulos told the New York Times in a new interview.

"At least I don't remember being drunk."

Papadopoulos also said he does not remember telling Downer about the dirt Russia apparently had on Clinton.

"I don't remember talking about that with him at all," he said.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contact with Russian nationals and Maltese professor, Joseph Mifsud.
