I'm not as familiar with the San Juan area as the Uncompagre, but they sell fire wood permits and you're allowed to take anything already dead or fallen on the ground. I'm not really sure about logging ops though.

A national forest is for the lumber industry to have wood and trees to cut down. If a tree lives for 80 years each year you cut down 1 80 th...

If they grow 60 years it might be 1 / 60th...

However some do not log much if any...
