Robert Mueller files request for 75 new blank subpoenas to use in Manafort trial

"Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Tuesday filed a request in federal District Court for 75 sets of blank subpoenas in the case against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

The request filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, requests 150 blank subpoenas — or 75 sets — for the prosecution and defense. Two subpoenas are required for each witness.

Manafort’s trial is scheduled to begin July 25.

Trump fixer Michael Cohen’s lawyers flee — and he’s likely to flip soon: report

"new report from ABC News claims that longtime Trump attorney Michael Cohen is getting close to accepting a deal to cooperate with federal investigators.

According to ABC’s sources, the law firm that has been representing Cohen so far “is not expected to represent him going forward” after this week.

The bigger news, however, is that Cohen is now likely to flip after being abandoned by his current legal counsel.

“Cohen, now with no legal representation, is likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors in New York,” the ABC report claims. “This development, which is believed to be imminent, will likely hit the White House, family members, staffers and counsels hard.”

Cohen and his attorneys have until Friday to complete a privilege review of more than 3.7 million documents that were seized as part of an FBI raid on Cohen’s office earlier this year. Once that review is complete, ABC News claims, then Cohen will be without counsel.

Vanity Fair’s Gabriel Sherman reported on Tuesday that Cohen has told friends that he expects to be arrested within a matter of days, although Cohen at the time publicly denied that was true."

Michael Cohen's lawyers are reportedly dropping him, and with no legal representation, he is expected to start cooperating. "This development, which is believed to be imminent, will likely hit the White House, family members, staffers and counsels hard."

Quote: After the federal raids on Cohen’s properties, President Trump lashed out in a tweet, writing, “Attorney-client privilege is dead!”

He told reporters at the White House that the move against his longtime personal attorney, which he likened to a break-in, was a “disgraceful situation.”

“It’s an attack on our country in a true sense. It’s an attack on all we stand for,” the president said during a meeting with senior military leadership at the White House. “That is really now on a whole new level of unfairness.”

Cohen then went to federal court in Manhattan arguing that his attorneys should be given a first look at the materials seized in the raids for items potentially covered by attorney-client privilege before federal prosecutors could examine the haul.

Judge Wood subsequently appointed former federal judge Barbara Jones to act as a “special master” to conduct an impartial review of the materials and to referee any disputes between Cohen and the government. Trump and the Trump Organization intervened in the case and were also granted access to review the materials for potentially privileged items.

Jones reported last week that of the first 300,000 items reviewed, she had determined that just 162 of them were covered by attorney-client privilege. She rejected three items that Cohen, Trump or the Trump organization had designated as privileged.

RE: Mueller files request for 75 new blank subpoenas to use in Manafort trial
More witnesses are cooperating with the Russia probe than have been publicly revealed, and Mueller is working to make sure their information doesn't get into the wrong hands.

In a new court document filed Tuesday, special counsel Robert Mueller’s team revealed that there are additional cooperating witnesses in the Russia probe whose identities have not yet been made public.

The revelation comes from a court filing in which attorneys for Mueller asked a judge to limit how much evidence can be shared with a Russian defendant indicted on charges of aiding Russia’s ongoing election interference operation.

In the document, Mueller’s team requested a protective order to impose limits on sharing information with Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian businessman who, along with his company, was charged with providing millions of dollars to support the activities of the notorious St. Petersburg-based “troll factory” known as the Internet Research Agency.

Since Prigozhin’s company is preparing to defend itself, Mueller’s team is required to turn over the evidence they’ve collected against it as part of the standard discovery process.

However, in the new court filing, Mueller’s team cited concerns that lawyers for the company might share the information with other defendants, including Prigozhin.

The filing also cites the potential for the evidence to be shared with intelligence officials who are actively engaged in efforts to sow discord in the U.S. and interfere in the 2018 midterm elections.

“Public or unauthorized disclosure of this case’s discovery would result in the release of information that would assist foreign intelligence services, particularly those of the Russian Federation, and other foreign actors in future operations against the United States,” the attorneys wrote in the court filing.
