National Security Concerns Means Rejecting Chinese Tech Companies for Australia

Turnbull government headed for a showdown with China over Huawei

"An Australian government decision to ban Huawei from 5G would effectively destroy the Chinese company's business here given it earned more than two-thirds of its $650 million in revenue last year supplying 4G equipment. Without any role in the mobile upgrade to 5G, contracts with Optus and Vodafone would become outmoded and irrelevant as telcos moved to other vendors.

This would not only humiliate Huawei. It would infuriate Beijing where Australia's treatment of Huawei has become another barometer of growing frictions in the broader relationship."

Australia supplants China to build undersea cable for Solomon Islands

"The Australian government has stepped in to help build a key piece of infrastructure for the Solomon Islands, as concerns about Beijing’s attempts at “soft diplomacy” continue to grow.

Malcolm Turnbull announced that Australia would jointly fund construction of an underwater telecommunication cable network, which will link remote Solomon Islands communities to Honiara.

Huawei had been earmarked to build the cable, after the Solomons originally awarded the contract to the Chinese company – a move that prompted Australian intelligence and security chiefs to warn against the deal."
