Ice quake? Or Earthquake?

I've still got a little over 999,000 posts to make before I can rate a thread however this one would get 5 stars great fine thank you for sharing what happened near home.

I really don't recall ever having earthquakes here in Virginia prior to about 10 years ago, now we have them every day or two. But then again we have the Appalachian Mountains and they are very active and Rising so earthquakes would appear to be the norm for us here.

Don't leave false illusions behind
Don't cry 'cause I ain't changing my mind
So find another fool like before
'Cause I ain't gonna live anymore
believing
Some of the lies while all of the signs are deceiving

Alberta is not exactly near home, but it's a very odd place for something like this.

Every now and then they need to set charges to open up a space bigger than the digging machine. They usually love to scheduled these around holidays when it can be explained away as 'fireworks' etc. Maybe there was a delay or something

i can see the pictures now. it looks more like a tension fracture as opposed to a compression fracture. usually it comes together really hard and heaves up if its a compression thing. if it froze really deep and heaved it up it could look like a tension fracture.

its a huge one for sure. never seen any like that around here.

any idea how deep the frost is there?

I don't know if they had the temps for frost to get down 15 ft. I checked out this site to see, but I don't know what it would take, or how long it would take. You can go back previous months too. Have a look if you are interested:

RE: Mysterious Big Bang in Alberta Shakes Village
i'm seeing ave of 7 ft deep frost in calgary. for a 7 ft deep frost to open a crack like that it would have to raise the ground 3 feet...just guessing it may be possible. but not likely. looks like something deeper was pushing up to me
