Manhattan DA Obtains Trump Tax Returns

"Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance has obtained former President Trump’s tax returns after a years-long fight for the financial records, Vance’s office confirmed to TPM.

The move caps an effort that began after a grand jury empaneled by the Manhattan prosecutor issued a subpoena for the records in August 2019.

Vance spokesman Danny Frost told TPM that the records were seized on Monday after the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from the former president in the matter. The documents span millions of pages, CNN and NBC reported.

In enforcing the subpoena, Vance got Trump’s tax returns, extending from January 2011 to August 2019. But he got more: He also obtained access to reams of work papers surrounding the tax returns’ preparation, financial statements from the Trump organization, engagement agreements, and other communications around the documents’ preparation.

The seizure marks a victory for Vance after a long battle in which the Supreme Court effectively allowed Trump to delay the state criminal investigation until after his presidential term concluded.

The legal arguments launched by Trump and his personal attorneys seeking to block the subpoena took on an increasingly monarchist tone as the case wore on, with lead attorney William Consovoy arguing that any sitting president is immune from criminal process. This reached its apex when Convosoy told the Second Circuit Court of Appeals that Trump could not be investigated by the NYPD if he shot someone on Fifth Avenue.

Mazars, Trump’s longtime accounting firm, fulfilled the subpoena after 17 months of forbearance due to the litigation. The same firm has also received congressional subpoenas for the former president’s tax returns, which remain bogged down in legal disputes launched by Trump to prevent any access to his financial history.

Vance has suggested that the criminal grand jury investigation focuses on allegations of bank, insurance, and tax fraud, with a particular focus on whether Trump would inflate or deflate the value of his assets to lenders and other financial institutions. "

Stunning new allegations further connect Trump to Russian mobsters and oligarchs

"However we decide to account for Donald Trump's astonishing rise and fall, we now know that he was certainly no stranger to a sprawling netherworld of Russian gangsters and oligarchs.

Now there are stunning new allegations in federal court documents that this Russian criminal network with worldwide reach hired Felix Sater, one of Trump's closest associates, to hide a fortune stolen in Kazakhstan.

The central Asian country was once part of the Soviet Union. The stolen fortune cited in the lawsuit is the tip of the iceberg.

Stolen money amounting to $440 million was invested in America and run through trust funds maintained by Moses & Singer. The New York City law firm has long represented Sater, a Soviet-born American.

The documents alleging Sater's illicit conduct are listed in the lawsuit brought by the city of Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan, and the looted BTA Bank in that city.

Some of the $440 million was intended to finance a Trump tower in Moscow, court papers show.

During the 2016 campaign Trump's then fixer, lawyer Michael Cohen, told a top aide to Vladimir Putin that the modern czar would be given the tower's $50 million penthouse. The Moscow tower was never built.

The gratuity, first reported by Buzzfeed, was intended to ensure that Russian oligarchs snapped up the rest of the apartments. Trump would have a huge windfall after, to his own surprise, he became the American president. As a candidate, Trump lied repeatedly, insisting he had no business dealings in Russia and was not pursuing any deals.

Mueller Stymied
Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III told Congress last year that his team was limited to investigating only criminal acts involved in the 2016 presidential campaign. He was instructed not to touch on counterintelligence.

That was a huge favor to Trump and to a vast network of Russian gangsters and fronts connected to Trump, to his campaign and another of his lawyers, Rudy Giuliani. The shady businesses specialize in bank fraud, kleptocracy, tax dodges and money laundering in America.

Step just one foot outside Trump's small immediate circle of violent felons and accused white-collar criminals and you find a kill-the-witness murderer plus allegations of human trafficking by Russian gangsters. Read on.

The Almaty plaintiffs describe a farflung scheme to hide much of the stolen money in America using Sater, a violent felon and stock swindler, and Robert S. Wolf, a Moses & Singer partner.

Wolf asked DCReport to delay the publication of this article so that he could prepare responses to our simple questions, including anything he wanted to say that we didn't ask about. We delayed this piece for more than a month. Wolf provided no statement.

We also reached out to the law firm's managing partner, Dean Swagert. He did not respond to an email or a telephone call."

Manhattan DA zeroing in on Trump Organization's chief financial officer: report

"One of the Trump Organization's top executives is the focus of prosecutors in New York City investigating the former president.

"State prosecutors in Manhattan who are investigating former President Donald J. Trump and his family business are sharpening their focus on the company's long-serving chief financial officer, asking witnesses questions about his dealings at the company, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The increased focus on the executive, Allen H. Weisselberg, could step up pressure on him to cooperate with the investigation if the prosecutors unearth evidence of wrongdoing on his part. He has served as the Trump Organization's financial gatekeeper for more than two decades and could be a vital source of information for the government about the inner workings of the company," The New York Times reported Monday.

The investigation may include Weisselberg's family.

"In recent weeks, the prosecutors working for the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., have been interviewing witnesses who know Mr. Weisselberg and have asked at least one witness about Mr. Weisselberg's sons, Barry and Jack Weisselberg, according to two of the people with knowledge of the matter. Barry Weisselberg has been the property manager of Trump Wollman Rink in Central Park, and Jack works at Ladder Capital, one of Mr. Trump's biggest lenders," the newspaper reported. "The district attorney's office has not accused Mr. Weisselberg or his sons of any wrongdoing, and there is no indication that the sons are a focus of the investigation."

The newspaper noted how impactful it would be if Weisselberg were to "flip" and turn state's evidence against Trump.

"If the prosecutors were to secure Allen Weisselberg's cooperation, it might provide a significant boost to the long-running investigation and deliver a blow to Mr. Trump, who has long depended on Mr. Weisselberg's unflinching loyalty," the newspaper noted. "Mr. Weisselberg, 73, an accountant, began his career working for Mr. Trump's father and has overseen the Trump Organization's books for decades. He recently ran the business with Mr. Trump's adult sons during the Trump presidency and remained loyal to the company even after his name surfaced during congressional and federal investigations into Mr. Trump or his business.""

Looking into some articles about Trump, which are none too flattering, I ran across a short article that said Bannon wrote Trump's impressive inauguration speech!! Now I wonder if he wrote Trump's lofty speech at Mount Rushmore, too.

There is not much Trump can do to defend himself from soliciting the secretary of state to change the GA election outcome. Trump also seems guilt AF of tax evasion, tax fraud and other felony crimes.

Georgia prosecutor already has Trump nailed for election meddling: ex-US Attorney

"On CNN Saturday, former U.S. Attorney Michael Moore argued that the evidence is already there for the criminal investigation into former president Donald Trump's phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger demanding he "find" an extra 11,000 votes.

"Michael, how difficult is it to build a case around fraud in particular?" asked anchor Fredricka Whitfield.

"You can build it. You just have to be specific in your claims and allegations," said Moore. "You want to show somebody had an intent to do something wrong, and that they tried to influence somebody else to participate in it or to turn things in a way that made it more favorable to the defendant. So fraud is a tough case on its own. But again, in these cases, you either trace the money, you trace the phone call, you trace the emails."

"What you find is these fraudsters and folks out there get caught by their own tongue. They just are unable to keep their mouths shut. That's why we've got an hour-long, essentially, confession about the president in Georgia on the case. He is soliciting somebody, that being the secretary of state, to commit election fraud. When you have a confession, the case against a lot simpler."

FBI 'conspiracy' probe of Trump insurrection will 'keep building' under Merrick Garland: MSNBC analyst

"Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Department of Justice are pursuing a far-reaching conspiracy investigation into the insurrectionists who breached the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.

MSNBC "Deadline: White House" host Nicolle Wallace played a clip of Garland discussing the insurrection by supporters of Donald Trump seeking to overturn the 2020 election.

"I think this was the most heinous attack on the democratic processes that I've ever seen and one that I never expected to see in my lifetime," Garland said. "I intend to give the career prosecutors who are working on this matter 24/7 all of the resources they could possibly require to do this and at the same time I intend to make sure that we look more broadly, to look at where this is coming from, what other groups there might be that could raise the same problem in the future, and that we protect the American people."

Wallace said, "The investigation into the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol will be Attorney General Merrick Garland's top priority as he spent his first day on the job in briefings about it. Those briefings likely include the latest on the investigation into the white supremacist groups aligned with Donald Trump who are under scrutiny for potentially conspiring to disrupt the counting of the electoral votes."

"This is an investigation that is going full steam ahead and yielding real results every day," she noted.

For analysis, Wallace interviewed Washington Post investigative reporter Carol Leonnig.

"I think you can tell, Nicolle, that this case is exactly as advertised by the new -- under-new-management department of justice, the biggest in modern history. The way you can tell that are some of the key data points," Leonnig explained. "There are essentially 900 different search warrants that have already been served. There are 21,000, I believe, hours of surveillance camera, body camera, individual bystander witness camera, that have to be surveilled. I've heard from sources, prosecutors in offices around the country from west to east, who have been contacted and asked 'would you like to work on this case,' because it's going to go on for a while.""

Trump’s longtime bodyguard implicated in ex-president’s alleged tax evasion scheme

"Donald Trump's longtime bodyguard Matthew Calimari could become a focus of prosecutors in Manhattan now that they have the former president's tax records.

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who will speak with prosecutors Friday for the eighth time, told lawmakers in 2019 that Calimari was familiar with Trump's alleged scheme to inflate the value of his assets to insurance companies as part of a tax evasion scheme, and Yahoo News reported the former bodyguard could become the next target for investigators.

Manhattan prosecutors are already trying to gain the cooperation of longtime Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, who Cohen believes will eventually flip under pressure, but investigators may also be interested in Calimari's testimony, as well.

Calimari has worked for the former president for 40 years, starting when Trump hired him as a bodyguard after seeing the former college football player tackle a heckler, and he and his namesake son reportedly ran surveillance operations at Trump's properties.

His LinkedIn page lists Calimari as the Trump Organization's chief operating officer, where he oversees building management, construction and insurance.

"He promotes you until you fail," Calimari said. "There are no boundaries.""
