I was looking for somewhere a bit different to travel to next year..

Im looking up Crimea and holiday villa options and costs...The coast does look nice.

Im British and i think its just we never really think about that part of the world apart from Balkan states like Croatia..

I was working with a Ukranian ex army guy a few months ago and we got on like a house on fire...However one day i wore my USSR T shirt on site and he didnt like it...He said that USSR was tantamount to me having SS or NAZI written on my T shirt...He said it wasnt they disliked Russians that much now..However he said the USSR soldiers raped their women and tortured their men back when Russia was communist.

He got me thinking about Ukrain and places to visit...your post just reminded me. call it Fate or what you want.

Cheers for the heads up..

Check this place out...Seems like a good base to explore from with a hire car...

Im liking it.

WEC. WEC. in 5..4..3..2..

chuckle

I know this is just a pathetic attempt to silence a dissenting view but I'll play along. Cheers

It's a deep shame for Crimeans that their vote was completed in circumstances not acceptable to all but 6 of the worlds ~200 nations.

Cuba (Dictatorship)
Nicaragua (Dictatorship)
Venezuela (Dictatorship)
Syria (Fascist state)
Afghanistan (Flawed democracy)
North Korea (Fascist state)

Ukrainians also have the same right as Crimeans to decide their own future.

Ukraine foreign policy orientations

47.3% - choose the option of "joining the European Union"
30.1% - "non-alignment" either to the European Union or to the Customs Union
11.9% - "joining the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia"

41.1% would vote in a referendum for joining NATO
30.7% would vote "Against"

Kosovan independence referendum, 1991

An independence referendum was held in Kosovo, then known as the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija between 26 and 30 September 1991. The dissolved Provincial Assembly had declared the Republic of Kosova a sovereign and independent state on 22 September 1991. Over 99% of voters voted in favour of independence, with a turnout of 87%.

The 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence was adopted on 17 February 2008 by the Assembly of Kosovo. In a meeting attended by 109 of the total 120 members, the assembly unanimously declared Kosovo to be independent from Serbia.

The cost to ordinary Russians for the annexation of Crimea has been severe.
But yay for cushy westerners.
At least your political philosophy of illiberalism has been advanced.

When I lived in Russia the ruble hovered around 30 to the dollar for years and years. It still blows my mind that it has lost more than half its value since the annexation of Crimea. Imagine trading half your people’s savings for a small piece of another country.

U.S. does not and will not recognize the annexing of Crimea. There will be no relief of sanctions until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine. Sec. Pompeo says at hearing.

German FM @HeikoMaas on Crimea: the annexation was a breach of international law. We will continue to make this clear. We will refuse to return to business as usual, how ever much time may pass.

Polish FM Czaputowicz: We fully support the declaration on Crimea issued today by @SecPompeo, in which the US rejects Russia's attempted annexation of Crimea.

Five countries align with EU move to extend sanctions over Crimea

After the EU Council adopted on June 18, 2018, a decision to extend until June 23, 2019, restrictive measures in response to the illegal annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia, the Candidate Countries Montenegro and Albania, and the EFTA country Norway, member of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and Georgia, aligned themselves with the said declaration,
