Brilliant “Book Buddies” Program Has Children Reading To Shelter Cats

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Pennsylvania has created the most genius program for cats and kids ever. The program called Book Buddies promotes childhood literacy and also helps improve the lives of shelter cats.

Book Buddies gives kids the opportunity to donate their time reading books to shelter cats in the cat room. When children complete reading five books to the cats they are given a prize as a little extra incentive. Not that the kids need it, they love reading to the cats, after all what kid doesn’t love hanging out with animals?

The project was originally launched back in 2013 and has since drawn children of all ages, including those that are home-schooled and autistic. All of the kids that have joined Book Buddies have shown unprecedented improvements in their reading abilities.

The Animal Rescue League writes: “Children in grades 1-8 who are able to read at any level may come into the shelter to read to the cats in our adoption room. The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals. Cats find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing.”

That's a great idea! Thanks, OP.
