This story by Rod MacDonell was published Nov. 16, 1985.

VALLEYFIELD — Raymond Steele, a sect minister, was sentenced last night to 25 years in prison for the torture-slaying of a pregnant woman.

About 40 people in the crowded courtroom shouted “Bravo! Bravo!” and applauded the Superior Court jury.

Police found her frozen 5ft. 5in. corpse stuffed in a 3ft.-long steamer trunk behind the house.

She had died about 30 hours earlier from loss of blood caused by seven knife wounds and 50 dog bites.

Evidence indicated she had been suspended by her ankles from a pipe in Steele’s basement, kicked by him and had been bitten repeatedly by his pit bull terrier.

The woman’s brother, Jean-Marc Quinn, told reporters Steele’s 25-year sentence is not harsh enough.

“I want him to suffer the same way my sister did,” Quinn said.

Steele, 33, grimaced as guards led him out of the courtroom to his cell.

He is a minister with the Universal Church of Enlightened Reason, a sect based in Modesto, California.

He told the English-speaking jury during the 10-day trial that he was ordained directly from heaven.

I posted this because I recently met one of the lawyers who handled the case. He was one of the defense attorneys. He wanted to plead the insanity defense on behalf of the accused, which probably would have worked, but the accused refused and decided to represent himself at his own trial.

The accused tried to defend himself by saying that he was Adam from the Bible. People in the courtroom thought he was very crazy.

Linda Quinn’s five-hour nightmare started then.

Thirty-three-year-old Steele, ordained by the Montreal-based Universal Life Church of Enlightened Reason sect, set out to ritually rid her of Satan, according to details eventually heard at his trial. Forensics and the testimony of a former friend, who was there throughout Quinn’s five-hour ordeal, paint a bloody, horrific picture.

Steele suspended Quinn with chains from a pipe in his basement. He let his dogs bite her 50 times. He stabbed her over and over. For five hours. When she died of blood loss, he poured boiling water over her corpse and packed her into a three-foot-long steamer trunk — she was five-foot-five — in the garage attached to his home.

When her sister came looking for her, he held her captive, rambling, all night, till she was able to escape to call police from a neighbour’s home.

During the trial, it was revealed that Quinn, who was 23 and was engaged to a Huntingdon man, had been eight weeks pregnant. It was also discovered that Steele had called police just before he started exorcising the devil from her. He told the dispatcher that he was a clairvoyant, and that five hours hence the Sûreté du Québec would torture a young woman to deat

Raymond Steele successfully appealed his conviction, but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. He was granted day parole in February 2016, and full parole Oct. 26, 2016
