How in the hell does that happen?

Over pressured? There's an individual pressure reducer at each point of entrance.

I was thinking same thing, and there are other valves and safety's like high pressure cuttoffs.

Saying a problem with the pressure in the lines maybe the cause and asking everyone with gas in homes to evacuate

Residents in the affected towns of Lawrence/North Andover/Andover who have gas service from Columbia Gas should evacuate their homes immediately if they have not already done so. Gas lines are currently being depressurized by the company it will take some time.

Lets hope its not an underground clathrate. In that case there would be no smell as additives to make it smell are not there. Doesn't make much sense as there are valves and stuff. Methane is combustible in 5 to 15% in air. Below or above that it doesn't burn.

So overpressurized gas leaked into houses? Only randomly ignited when someone tries to light their stove?

60 psi at the street and lke a 1/4 pound psi at appliance..

each house is separate and there are regulators and safety valves and sensors up stream that messure gas flow ... makes no sence how multiple houses can go up unless the gas is traveling in conduits finding other paths.

I wonder if any people were passed out in their homes due to the fumes?
