The US minimum wage should be more like $25 or $30 an hour. At that point our wages would actually exceed cost of living in most places, and allow the worker to live prosperously.

Compared to paycheck to paycheck living that we have now, where every work week is filled with desperation and trying to figure out how you're going to pay your bills and keep food on the table, and keep gas in the gas tank.

What we have today is wrong. Generations of our forefathers fought, worked, bled, and cried building this country so we could live in misery? No. Our workers deserve better.

That's not entitlement mentality. Our rich are taking advantage.

60 hours a week at min wage wouldn't even cover 25% of the cost for the OBummer UN-affordable healthcare insurance for just me alone.

at 3 part time jobs to get the same wage as a person working 40hrs in the developed world?
And on top of that people in America must literally worship the dictator and all the prosperity, guns and pickup trucks that he bring otherwise people will loose a lot of weight?

"lose" a lot of weight. your're very heavy just not at the top. put in a few more hours duuuuude.

Only people who have made some SERIOUSLY poor life choices.

We have blue collar guys working for us at around $25 an hour. Because they bothered to learn a skill, because they are hard workers, because they’ve been with us foa a few years and have worked their way up the pay scale. Sometimes they see overtime when we’re slammed busy, and then they make $37 for their time.

We also have guys at just above minimum wage, because they have no experience, dealt with substance abuse issues, have rarely held steady employment. We’re not going to hire someone at the max rate who’s only worked at McDonald’s, who has never held a job for longer than a year, has been in jail, or has multiple violence charges.

It’s not hard to get a job that pays better, and slowly over several years, work your way up. The problem we see a LOT is someone suddenly demanding more money because they perceive themselves as vitally important to the operation. And when they are told ‘no’, they pitch a fit and quit. So when their next employer calls for references, instead of hearing about what a great worker he was, they learn what a pain in the ass he was. So then they are also not inclined to hire him at a premium rate.

I'm laughing because I actually am vitally important to the operation of my employer, but practically get paid in peanuts.

I built our Active Directory domain, our file servers, our imaging server, all of our group policies. I built our network. Me. No one else knows how to keep things going. If I was fired, they would be fvcked.

I make about $30k a year. My college degree, all of my skills, gets me less pay than a plumber.

So why are you still there?

IT is supply and Command Dumbass

This is true. I wish I had known it before I went to college for it. Back when I was in high school I was hearing stories about people getting cisco certification (no college) and walking into a $30k a year job fresh out of high school. Which wasn't too bad back when Bush was in office.

Now that's just not happening. IT has become absolutely saturated in the past 10-15 years. Lots of people looking for the good money. Now the gravy train has dried up.

My advice for prospective high school graduates - go into medicine. Doctors and lab technicians make so much money right now. It's ridiculous.

The key to getting paid well in IT, is to get jobs word of mouth ad be damn good at your job.

IT people are a dime a dozen. Good IT people are harder to find. Good IT people who go the extra mile are harder still to find.

I now see jobs for my skills advertized at 30k, I get around 350 a day if I get jobs WOM. I've seen what the 30k guys produce and fully understand why I still get 350 a day. If I pushed harder I know I could get more.

There are also higher paying roles, but you have to be good at it, not just someone who did the course and can follow the steps if everything goes by the book.

Housing is so expensive in America some cities around $1500 to 2K a month for a 1 bedroom apartment plus utility costs, and that's not in great neighborhoods either. Most renters are forced to pay for parking or garage fees, $600 to $1000 a month, renters insurance, and renters association fees in the nicer places as well. Pet rent is also standard.

If you want to make higher wages by living in the bigger cities, you pay higher rent and utilities and other added on fees. Some of the younger people are stacked up living 4 people to a one bed apartment to cover the costs. It is beyond expensive and pretty impossible to get ahead these days for the majority.

$900 to $1000 monthly for a single room, 20 ft by 20 ft in Denver, central US is pretty much considered inexpensive for city dwellers.

Funny how all these companies can keep reducing sizes in-terms of food and perishable goods and can afford to raise the prices. But for the average consumer it takes years for their wage to get to the level of that inflation.

I visited Ukraine once and had to double-check on the prices over there, an average litre bottle of coca-cola in the states usually costs $2.09usd. Over in Ukraine its $0.70usd.

People are utterly exhausted in America and are not only overworked but can't afford to eat or live. The constant wifi ringing keeps everyone insomniacs too. But no one does anything about it and it costs too much to pay insurance fees in order to see a doctor.

Everything is so spread out with urban sprawl it is such a huge waste of time and money trying to go anywhere to do anything and the cost of transportation, gas, car insurance, and car registration is ridiculous. There is not enough time, rest, money, or food in America. People are burnt out and the country is falling apart.

The number of homeless people and the number of empty repossessed houses is what strikes me too. How impossibly hard just simple living has become.

RE: Is it true that people in Ameica must work 60h per week
I work 70hrs a week.
I get no overtime pay.

After 70 hours , I can't work any job for 34 hours.
I drive 11 hours a day, work a total of 14.
I get paid $0.43 a mile.

I'm a truck driver ,the backbone of the United States economy. If it wasn't for me everything you do and rely on would not happen.. I deliver the shirt on your back, the tires for your car, the potatoes for McDonalds fries, the flat screen TV you watch.

I am the most under paid and disrespected individual and the entire US workplace.. .

I chuckle when I hear people wanting the minimum wage raise because they run a cash register at Walmart or flip burgers at McDonald's...

If I were to be paid by the hour, I would make more money stocking shelves at Target then I do operating a tractor and trailer.

43c a mile wouldn't even cover, gas, repairs, insurance and/or other operating costs of my old clunker vehicle.

lol cupidstunt talks about 38$ / hr like it is special.

Maybe back in the 50s..

It’s not special. But that’s about what our guys (welders, pipe fitters) get paid out in the shop once they hit overtime. We’re talking guys with GEDs and high school diplomas at best. And no unions to demand their cut.

Not special, by any means, but damn good money for blue collar workers.

Yes, good money.

My guess is the poster read that as 38c/hr instead of the $38/hour you intended.

In my adult working life, i always worked corporate jobs that paid salary plus commission. We didn't clock in and out. We are adults, we are being paid to get the job done. Sometimes that meant working 60 hours a week, sometimes it meant working 30 hours a week. Later in life I owned my own business. I was at work 24/7. I could be fishing, I could be playing golf, I could be sitting on my couch watching a football game. But I was still at work, if my phone rang, I answered it.

This poster knows how to Play The Game.
