RE: Countdown to UK EU referendum
Non-British voters

Some 470,000 Irish, Maltese and Cyprus-born British residents will be able to vote in June’s referendum. The majority of EU nationals are barred from participating.

Parliamentary franchise in the UK allows citizens of the Republic of Ireland and Commonwealth countries – such as Malta and Cyprus – to vote in general elections and referendums.

There are 383,000 Irish citizens resident in the UK, in addition to 27,000 Maltese citizens and 60,000 Greek-Cypriots.

Scotland should hold new referendum if forced out of EU - Sturgeon

Scotland should have the right to hold a new referendum on independence if the country is taken out of the European Union "against our will", the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) said on Sunday.

Facing a British referendum on whether to stay in the European Union on June 23, Nicola Sturgeon used her party's manifesto before the election for the Scottish parliament next month to make clear that she wanted another independence vote in Scotland.

There should be such a referendum, she said, "if there is clear and sustained evidence that independence has become the preferred option of a majority of the Scottish people".

'In' campaign gains steam ahead of EU referendum, polls show

British support for staying in the European Union has risen slightly, according to two opinion polls on Wednesday that add to signs the "Remain" campaign has gained momentum ahead of a referendum in June.

An Ipsos MORI telephone poll of 1,026 people showed the "In" camp, supported by Prime Minister David Cameron, holding a 10-point lead over those wanting to leave the 28-nation bloc.

While backing for the remain campaign was unchanged from last month at 49 percent, support for the "Out" vote fell two points to 39 percent.

A TNS online poll earlier on Wednesday also pointed to a widening gap, putting the "In" campaign on 38 percent against 34 percent for the pro-Brexit camp.

"The last five pollsters to report ... have all reported a move to 'Remain' on their previous polling," election analyst Mike Smithson noted.

Result of our Sussex-wide EU poll

For the past week we have asked the question ‘Should the UK remain a member of the European Union?’ and gave readers four options (Yes, No, Undecided and No interest).

38% per cent of you voted ‘Yes’, 56 per cent ‘No’, six per cent ‘Undecided’, while no one clicked on the ‘No interest’ option.

More than 2,000 people took part in the poll.

It's every Brits duty to vote Out if they value what our ancestors have fought and died for. It's sad and really shouldn't have to be this way. Everyone was happy with being in a visa free trade zone, then they went and spoilt it by getting greedy for Power.

Negative (-1): R Eldritch is a total douche bag. I tried to help him come out of his negative hating downward spiral, but he's incorrigible. Sorry I even wasted my valuable time on the asshole.

Business vote to leave the EU stronger than thought, YouGov poll finds

The business vote for the UK to remain in the European Union is far more divided that many had previously thought, according to research from pollsters YouGov.

It showed that 40 per cent of executives surveyed think the UK would be better off out of the trading bloc, with 49 per cent in favour of staying in and 11 per cent undecided.

Previous business surveys have found a clear majority for remaining in the EU – with anything from 60 per cent to 80 per cent backing remaining, with only small percentages actively in favour of leaving.

Poll: Majority of Swedes want to leave EU in case of Brexit

If the UK leaves the EU after its referendum in June, a majority of Swedes would wish their country to follow suit, according to a new opinion poll.

At the moment, 44% of the Swedish voters would like to remain in the bloc, with 32% wanting out.

But should Britain leave the EU after its in/out referendum on 23 June, then these figures would be turned around.

According to a poll published by Sifo on Wednesday (20 April), 36% of the Swedes would in that scenario want to follow the Brits while 32% would want to keep the EU membership.

British farmers best served by UK staying in EU, says NFU

The National Farmers’ Union, which represents farmers across England and Wales, said it would not be actively campaigning in the EU referendum and would not tell its 55,000 members how to vote.

But a resolution passed by the NFU council said: “On the balance of existing evidence available to us at present, the interests of farmers are best served by our continuing membership of the European Union.”

The decision comes after the NFU commissioned a report on the impacts of Brexit on farming.

The report by Wageningen University in the Netherlands found that in two of three scenarios farm-gate prices could increase, bolstering farming incomes but reducing consumption of products as they become more expensive.
