They were much more reliable in the past. Even with them before the recent "wipe" they weren't as reliable before.

Want a grenade to toss? Wouldn't it be amusing if they got fixed, and all of our "hidden 1337" posts then showed up with the new number so you could see it later.

Alternate Data Streams?

It happened unintentionally at the CTC actually, we changed a few things with the ID system out of request, so for awhile people couldn't see who was who, then it identified them later.

Unfortunately a second time we had to redo it, and then started over again.

So maybe we will get lucky and have it happen here.

There are ways to custom build guests posts via ID too, just like a registered members post list, and all be found via search.

FoxFire had to code it for us.

The searchable guest post list is interesting in concept too.

Some examples for use

1. You had a significant conversation with someone, but can't remember the number, a quick look would remind you who they were.

2. You as a guest user may want to be able to look up your old posts, see if they were replied to, or maybe you had some useful information there.

3. Can get an idea who you are talking to

4. Potential trolling history

5. Have a guest you like to read, so can check on their recent activity.

But it comes at a cost, many guests would be uncomfortable with the ease it would be to see the post history, they may post anonymously for a reason.

Our numbers in the past weren't that useful either.

There were times that my number and some other guest' number were the same.

There were times when we got numbers of people that had posted before, that weren't us either.

And, the numbers changed practically everyday it seemed. Sometimes a number would hang on almost a week, but, usually they were changed much more often. I don't know why. Just that is the way it was.

A number is just a number. Go by the contents on the post.

The current lack of displayed user IDs really only affects frontend operations, mods and ownership still can identify individual IP addresses. Nevertheless, it's an interesting experiment. If a forum were to value content and prioritize the substance of its arguments & discussions above the superficial elements that tend to dominate, user names, ID numbers, avatars and rating systems would lose much of their purpose.

never was id numbers in the past on ct or other forums
most still don't have id numbers

Jhikpghf

I wish it was like that.
It is a big reason why I never registered. I want my posts to speak for themselves not my online persona.

You've only got one? What a shame — you've been missing out on so much fun. Daydream1

user id numbers are great when you need to know who you are arguing with - if they are the same one you argued with before
