Avdiivka is Ukrainian held. Unless you are watching Russian TV, then Avdiivka is [pro] Russian held. ;/

Deadly surge of violence in eastern Ukraine

According to Alexander Hug, head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s monitoring mission in Ukraine, both sides are making use of heavy weapons such as the multiple-launch Grad missile system, and they are doing so in plain sight of OSCE observers.

In the town of Avdiivka, whose prewar population of 35,000 has been reduced to an estimated 15,000 to 20,000, residents who have elected to stay voiced utter dismay Friday.

While the fighting has been largely kept to the outskirts of Avdiivka during the day, the nighttime has been hellish for residents. Shells have landed indiscriminately throughout the town, and civilian casualties are racking up. Some residents are still without power or heat lost during the fighting, and most are relying on humanitarian aid boxes for food, bedding, candles and other supplies.

Ukrainian Tanks in Avdiivka Residential Area

On February 1, Tom Burridge of the BBC shared a video on Twitter showing Ukrainian troops and tanks in what appeared to be a residential area in Avdiivka.

Lukashenka Accuses Russia Of ‘Grabbing Belarus By The Throat’

Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has lashed out at Russia, accusing his powerful neighbor of violating treaties and using its role as an energy supplier to "grab us by the throat."

Speaking to journalists in Minsk on February 3, Lukashenka harshly criticized Moscow's recent decision to establish a "security zone" with border controls along the two countries' shared border.

Russia made the move to secure the previously open border after Minsk announced it was granting visa-free entry to Belarus to short-term visitors from some 80 countries as of February 9.

At his press conference, Lukashenka said Russia had "crossed out" existing treaties with Belarus "with the stroke of a pen."

The Belarusian president also accused Russia of trying to bolster its influence over Belarus by pushing to control its energy pipelines and using oil and gas supplies as a lever of power.

Ukraine to change gender recognition process and do away with forced sterilisation

LGBT activists in Ukraine are pleased to see revisions to the rules which allow trans people to legally change their gender.

The gender recognition process for trans people could get a lot simpler under proposed new rules.

The new rules, which will build on or change Order 60 of the Ministry of Health in Ukraine still fall short of other countries, notes the Human Rights Watch, but are a welcome step forward for transgender people there.

Previously trans people were made to undergo psychiatric observation and sterilisation in order to get divorced and get access to gender reassignment surgery.

The steps were all necessary in order for trans people to legally change their gender on official documents.

DFS: works continue to restore electricity for Avdiivka and water filtration station. Ceasefire holds.

Devastated Ukrainian City Awakens To 'Relative Calm'

Residents of this front-line flashpoint city awoke to relative calm on February 4 after a week of heavy artillery bombardments.

Pavlo Malykhin, the city’s head of civilian and military affairs, told RFE/RL he believed the welcomed lull was due to a local cease-fire brokered by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Malykhin said that 114 residential homes, including eight multicomplex apartment blocks and 22 individual apartments, have been damaged by shelling since January 29.

In Donetsk several buildings, including a kindergarten, were reportedly damaged.

Former Ukrainian prime minister says she was reassured by Trump

Former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko had a momentary meeting with Trump on Thursday just before he spoke to the National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton.

Tymoshenko and a group of supporters who traveled with her from Kiev this week quickly relayed word of the exchange, telling allies in Washington that Trump had said he would not abandon Ukraine and would not lift sanctions against Russia until Ukraine was secure.

RE: Ukraine / Eastern Europe Updates
This is more than interesting. Forget this is about Russia. It could be about any Government and used to predict conflict.

Putin's information war

Czech analysts found after investigating 22,000 Russian-language online sources that Moscow’s propaganda started two years before the military intervention in the case of Ukraine and four weeks in advance concerning Syria. First came the journalists, then tanks and bombs.

According to the Moscow Times, in May 2014 Russian President Vladimir Putin decorated more than 300 journalists for their “objective” reports on the annexation of Crimea – which the Kremlin’s spokesperson admitted to, but he did not want to elaborate on the topic.

Semantic Visions is a risk assessment company based in Prague, which works for private companies, non-profits and think tanks as well as Czech state institutions. They conduct their big data (meaning non-structured, large data requiring serious calculations) analyses with the aid of open source intelligence, on the foundation of which they try to identify trends or risk factors.

Semantic Visions included more than 400,000 online sources, including 22,000 Russian ones in its research: they had algorithms read online articles searching for different trends. They conducted numerous analyses that undoubtedly and spectacularly prove connections between Russian propaganda and the actions of the Russian army.

The period shown on the first chart starts in June 2011 and ends in February 2014: The graph shows how many Russian (red columns) and English (blue columns) articles with a negative tone on Ukraine had been published in the more than two and a half years before this event. It is obvious immediately that even in the beginning of the period under review there were more Russian-language articles that spoke negatively about Ukraine than there were English ones in Western/global media.

From February 2012 the number of Russian articles with a negative tone on Ukraine at that point started to show a gradual and trend-like increase – while no similar trend can be found in English-language media.

[Image: 14596705_4d6b2eaed9829d836f3bdd7b03ca9ba4_wm.png]

The company’s similar big data analysis found a connection between intensifying Russian propaganda and Moscow’s military actions in the case of another military intervention. On the chart below you can see how the number of Russian articles on Syria changed daily from early 2014 to spring 2016.

Neither an increasing nor a decreasing trend is visible in the number of reports on Syria – up until September 2015, when the article count started to rise rapidly. The analysis found that the four weeks before the first Russian air strike was characterised by a mass production of articles on Syria in Russia.

The Kremlin used Russian journalists in order to prepare the Russian public for the Syrian war.
