A cofferdam is a temporary enclosure built within, or in pairs across, a body of water and constructed to allow the enclosed area to be pumped out. This pumping creates a dry work environment for the major work to proceed.

Aye, but cofferdams are far from random. Look closely, my dear. Heartflowers

RE: Cofferdams
an old boy with lots of cofferdam experience was telling me about them.

the brooklyn bridge was where they got their name... he said it was like a diving bell. and the pressure differential when you came out made everyone cough.

he also said...if you trickle ashes down the wall in the water by a leak. it plugs the hole. the old school way

Interesting. I was by the Brooklyn bridge just the other day; a fascinating and solid structure, much larger than it may appear from a distance. I'm amazed it was sucessfully built at all in those days.

Thanks for your replies. Heartflowers

Interesting OP but what is your personal obsession with coffer dams?

I've worked on elements of their design in the past.

Last year I was living in a place in the U.S. where this technology is being used on a large-scale. Permanent placement to retain industrial waste.

I could not actually get close to it to see it for myself (as it is located on a military base) so had to suffice for Google Earth satellite views; even in that format, it was quite impressive (and suspicious, what may be actually stored in there so close to a large, civilian population.)

Masonic symbolism, meets Black Smiths, and starving people willing to die in order to eat.

That is a history that really can't be replaced. Though there are plenty of lessons that should never be forgotten as to the cost for living , working, and not being under the thumb of "entitlements" .

We have constructed megaliths, behemoth machines, and unknown horrors, still culminating as we speak.

Cofferdams are really fascinating though. Did you see any of the images and stuff about the construction of Chinas Megadam?

Now that's crazy.
